About This Pub

Ah, the Starbank Inn – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a hidden gem in Newhaven, Edinburgh, with its historic roots going back to 1810 and those incredible sea views that make every visit feel a bit special. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the staff are absolute stars, always on hand with a smile and quick to help, which really sets the tone for a welcoming evening. The food doesn't disappoint either; whether it's the amazing fish and chips or those Sunday specials, it's clear they've put thought into making meals that hit the spot. And for drinks, there's a nice range of local ales and more, perfect for winding down after a long walk. On the flip side, it's worth noting that the beer isn't always at its fizziest, and during big events like sports matches, things can get a tad noisy with impatient service at the bar – not everyone's cup of tea if you're seeking peace and quiet. Overall, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together, especially if you fancy a spot with a view and a lively crowd, but maybe plan around the quieter times for the best experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, always making you feel welcome like you're catching up with old mates.
  • The food is spot on – think delicious fish and chips, tasty soups, and some cracking specials, especially on Sundays.
  • You've got those stunning sea views that make it a proper treat for a relaxed afternoon or evening by the water.
  • It's a cosy and warm spot with a historic feel, dating back to 1810, which adds a bit of character to your visit.
  • They've got a great selection of drinks, including local ales and options for cocktails or wine, plus it's family and dog-friendly.
  • Live sports like the Women's Euros are shown, so it's brilliant for watching the big games in a buzzing atmosphere.
Cons
  • The beer can sometimes be a tad flat, which might disappoint if you're after that perfect pint.
  • Bar staff can get a bit impatient during busy times, like when everyone's cheering for a match, making it hard to hear or get served quickly.
  • The place can get quite loud and lively, especially for events, so it might not be ideal if you're after a quiet chat.

Been told forever to visit here. I finally came and I was NOT disappointed. Very nice establishment. Cosy and warm. The staff were friendly and attentive. Menu had plenty of choice. The beer is was slightly flat, but not horrific. Food was very tasty, and my Polish in-laws loved it. Would definitely come back here again. Great location!

On 17th November, my wife and I visited this Inn. All staffs were very good as usual. All ordered cuisines were also very good. Thank you! On 7th September, I visited there for our lunch with my wife. All staffs were very good. And our ordered meals were very good. We enjoyed very much. We are starting the 12 PuB Trail. I think it is very good trail. Today, we got nice two glasses from the trail awards from this Inn. It was also very good. Looking forward to visiting again soon. Thank you!

We really enjoyed lunch at this pub. The food was amazing, one of the best fish and chips I've tried. The soup was delicious and the bread was really good. They have specials every Sunday. It is a great place for luch after a long walk. They also offer local ales. We tried the ale of the house and it was really good. We will definitely come back!

Very traditional and sprawling pub. We came for a euro cup match, so perhaps it's different other times, but it was buzzing. Lots of loud people cheering. Impatient bar staff, who you could barely hear or them hear you over the din and seemed to get annoyed at you if you didn't scream at them. The food was... interesting. Nothing to write home about. Just typical pub fare. Except the so-called Eton Mess. It was like a plate of pink vomit? It tasted fine, but the texture and consistency were unappealing. And on a plate? I'm sorry. It was really unappealing. And they really kept rushing me to finish the food because the cook was going home? Okay, and? So, give me a takeaway box and let me keep eating. I've never been so pressed to finish eating, especially at a pub that is going to be open for hours yet. Eventually, I just told them to throw it out then. I wasn't done eating but I was sick of them constantly pestering me to finish my food. It was just weird. We were all still ordering drinks and watching the match which still had so much time left, so it was pretty irritating to be rushed like that. The servers were all very nice though other than that. Cider was good.
