About This Pub

Ah, Basils in Newhaven – it's one of those places that really pulls you in with its trendy setup and that buzz of a good night out. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the food is a standout; folks are raving about dishes like the tender lamb with its tasty sauce or the hearty haggis, and it's all served up with generous portions that make you feel like you've got your money's worth. The staff are proper friendly too, always quick to help and making sure everything runs smoothly, which is just what you want when you're out for a bite and a drink. Plus, their craft cocktails add a nice touch for those evenings when you're in the mood for something a bit special. It's in a great spot near the tram, so it's easy to swing by after a wander around Edinburgh. On the flip side, though, it's not perfect – there aren't loads of vegan options, which might put off some mates who are into that, and the beer selection doesn't lean much towards local brews, which is a shame for us who like to keep it regional. The atmosphere has its moments, but things like the lighting can feel a bit harsh, making it not quite as cosy as you'd hope. Overall, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together, especially if you're after good value and a welcoming feel, but it'd be even better with a few adjustments to really shine for all tastes.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think tender lamb with a delicious sauce or classic haggis that's full of flavour, making it a real treat for a meal out.
  • Friendly staff who go out of their way to make you feel welcome, with quick and pleasant service that adds to the enjoyable vibe.
  • Reasonable prices for what you get, especially with generous portions that leave you satisfied without breaking the bank.
  • A vibrant atmosphere with craft cocktails and events that make it a fun spot for a night out in Newhaven.
  • Handy location right near the tram station, perfect for popping in after a day exploring Edinburgh.
Cons
  • Not many vegan options on the menu, which is a bit disappointing if you're after plant-based choices.
  • Limited selection of local beers, so if you're keen on supporting nearby breweries, it might fall short.
  • The atmosphere can feel a tad off at times, like the lighting being too bright, which stops it from being completely relaxed.
  • Allergen concerns are mentioned, so if you have dietary needs, it's worth double-checking to avoid any surprises.

Food and service was amazing, the lamb was tender and a delicious sauce accompanying it. Friendly staff and would highly recommend. We went on a quieter weeknight.

Reasonable price and good taste. Speed of service was also high.

We had a very enjoyable lunch when the weather was warm enough to sit outside. Portions were very good and the service very pleasant. It was not busy when we were there, but it was a late lunch.

This place has so much potential. Friendly service, comfy, plenty of events, and the cocktails were good, but would love some vegan food options so we could eat here, and would also love some local beers on the menu. The atmosphere wasn't quite right either. Good music but the lights were way too bright, needs some candles or something to make it cosy. We will still definitely be back for more drinks! Edit: they added vegan options! Fab 👌

Quirky little restaurant located opposite the Newhaven tram station, which has a fun themed restaurant for all those architecture gurus out there who love Basil Spence (with several of his buildings being in Newhaven and Edinburgh). I had the Haggis, Neeps and Tatties which was lovely, however I wasn’t a fan of the whiskey sauce that went along with it. And my company had a mix of the blue cheese burger, chicken burger, soup of the day and fried cauliflower, all of which were highly praised! Props to the young man who served us who was charming and filled with knowledge on the local area that we were visiting on 22/10/24, fantastic service all round!
