About This Pub

Ah, St Thomas Cross – it's one of those classic rural pubs in Rugby that you stumble upon and think, 'This is just the ticket for a quiet pint.' From what I've gathered, the staff are genuinely warm and chatty, which really adds to the charm and makes you feel right at home. The drinks are a highlight too; they've got a solid range of real ales and other tipples that hit the spot, especially if you're after something traditional. Plus, being dog-friendly with a nice outdoor area means it's perfect for those sunny afternoons when you fancy a bit of fresh air with your beer. On the flip side, though, there have been a few tales of some locals being a tad unfriendly, which could spoil the mood if you're not in the right crowd. And let's be honest, if you're hoping for a bite to eat beyond crisps and nuts, you might end up disappointed – it's more about the drinks than a full meal. Overall, it's a solid choice for a relaxed catch-up with mates, but I'd say go in with realistic expectations to avoid any surprises. It's got that homely pub feel, but like any spot, it's not without its quirks.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and really make you feel welcome, which is just what you want after a long day.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks, including some top-notch real ales, perfect for a proper pub experience.
  • It's dog-friendly and has a cosy outdoor seating area, making it a great spot for a relaxed pint with your furry mate on a nice day.
  • The location's a treat – a traditional rural pub with convenient parking, ideal if you're popping in from nearby Rugby.
Cons
  • There have been a few reports of some regulars being a bit unwelcoming or making rude comments, which can put a damper on things.
  • No proper cooked food on offer, just snacks like nuts and crisps, so you might need to head elsewhere if you're after a hearty meal.
  • Recent feedback suggests the atmosphere isn't always spot on, with one or two experiences feeling a bit off lately.

Unpleasant experience from the start. The moment I walked in, a group of regulars felt the need to make rude comments, acting like they own the place. Made for a very unwelcoming atmosphere. Won't be back.

Nice big car park to park my truck up for a tachograph lunch break. No cooked food but plenty of nuts and crisps. Well stocked bar too. Not that I indulged in anything more than a J2O.

I visited St Thomas Cross pub last weekend and had the most fabulous experience! It's a really cool, rural pub in Rugby with a pretty convenient parking space nearby. Staff was very friendly and welcoming - we very much enjoyed having a chat with them! Beers were great and the atmosphere Idyllic! 🍄🐓🐄 I certainly recommend this pub - please, visit when around the area! You'll love It! 👍🍻

St Thomas Cross is a very popular traditional rural pub. It boasts a large car park and is situated on the junction of four roads just outside the village of Newton and roughly 10 minutes drive north from Rugby town centre. It is a Free House and serves a selection of real ales and enjoys a listing on the Rugby CAMRA web site.  At the time of writing they don’t serve food, which is unfortunate as it is very family friendly and even has a substantial children’s play area, though BBQs are a regular feature during the summer months. Live music is provided on Sundays and local bands can entertain the customers outdoors using the purpose built shelter in the BBQ area and such events attract visitors from as far away as Liverpool.
