About This Pub

Ah, St Nicholas Arms in Carlisle – it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its blend of traditional charm and modern tweaks, like the contemporary décor and that new terrace for soaking up the fresh air. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the food steals the show; folks are buzzing about the freshly prepared dishes, from pizzas and pastas to those hand-cut chips that are supposedly the best around – it's all about hearty, tasty meals that leave you satisfied. The drinks menu is another winner, offering everything from craft beers to inventive cocktails, making it a great place to unwind with a group. And the atmosphere? It's buzzing with Sky Sports and live events, which adds to the fun and makes it feel like a proper local hangout. On the flip side, though, service isn't always on point; there've been tales of staff being a tad hostile or unhelpful, especially with simple things like coffee orders, and if you're relying on takeaways, delays can crop up unexpectedly. Overall, it's a solid choice for a good night out, but I'd say go in with realistic expectations – the highs are high, but those occasional lows might just nudge you to another spot next time if you're after flawless service.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food's absolutely brilliant – reviewers are raving about the pizzas, pastas, and even the tortellini, with fresh pub favourites and those unique sharing towers that sound like a fun way to tuck in with mates.
  • Staff are super friendly and attentive; it's heartwarming to hear how they check in on you and make everyone feel welcome, adding to that cosy, traditional pub charm.
  • They've got a cracking selection of drinks, from continental lagers and craft beers to classic cocktails and an exciting wine list, so there's something for every taste.
  • The atmosphere is spot on with Sky Sports, regular live entertainment, and a new outdoor terrace – perfect for enjoying a pint or a meal with friends and family.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit hit or miss; one person had a right off experience with rude staff over a simple coffee order, which put a dampener on things.
  • If you're popping in for a quick takeaway, it might not always run smoothly – like that Sunday lunch that was delayed due to weather, which was a bit frustrating.
  • Coffee options are limited; no alternatives like oat or almond milk, and one review mentioned it tasting more like warm milk and water, so it's not ideal for everyone.

Very good food! Many choices. We had pizza and four different pastas. All very good. Tortellini was fantastic! Server was so nice! Manager checked on us. Will absolutely eat here next time we are in town.

We ordered a coffee. They do not offer oat or almond milk. The cappuccino was warm milk and warm water, with no coffee in it. The frontman was rude, almost hostile. We parked on the premises, but somehow, we were meant to know that this was not allowed. They could have warned us, but we received a fine from a private security firm. It was the perfect trap. Never again! A place I do not recommend.

Pre Ordered 3 takeaway Sunday lunches yesterday for 5pm didn't arrive until 6pm then when phoned up to ask if it was on its way we were told 'due to poor weather conditions and it being dark it was taken longer then usual.' Even though just eat deliver plenty of meals I'm sure they are used to it. Food was barely warm or edible we had waited that long we then had to reheat the food and eat it. Bearing in mind it was ordered 4hrs before we wanted it. Won't be coming back here again terrible service. For £37.50 this standard is not great
