About This Pub

You know, I popped into St. Machar Bar the other day and it really hit the spot – it's tucked away in a lovely part of Aberdeen with that classic old architecture vibe. What stands out most is their incredible whisky range; they've got everything from a bargain at £3.50 to some fancy ones up to £35, and the staff are absolute gems, always ready with a tip or a story about their collection. The atmosphere is just brilliant, buzzing with students, academics, and tourists all getting along famously. The food's decent too – I had the fresh fish which was spot on, though I'll admit the chips were from frozen, so it's not quite gourmet level. It's a cosy little place, mind you, which means it fills up fast and can feel a bit squished on busier nights. All in all, it's a solid choice for a pint and a chat, with plenty of positives that make up for the minor niggles, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Fantastic selection of whiskies with options for every budget, from affordable drams to premium picks
  • Friendly and knowledgeable staff who make you feel welcome and can chat about their impressive collection
  • Lively atmosphere that's perfect for mingling with a mix of students, academics, and visitors
  • Reasonably priced drinks and solid pub grub, like fresh fish and tasty snacks
  • Great local beers on tap, including nitro and cask-conditioned options, and it's CAMRA registered for real ale enthusiasts
Cons
  • Some food items, like chips, are from frozen rather than fresh, which might disappoint if you're after top-notch quality
  • It's a small space, so it can get crowded quickly, especially during peak times

Lovely area of the university/village. Popped in for a bite to eat. I’ll forgive the chips from frozen as the fresh fish was great and a reasonable price. Atmosphere was great with academics, students and tourists. Whisky selection was vast with a range of prices and one at £3.50 to £35. An old fashion, pleasant and hospital pub. Staff were great.

Famous for a reason. Right in the middle of old architecture this small pub sports local taps that include several nitro and three cask conditioned. Also registered with CAMRA Their Whisky selection is incredible and the staff know a lot about their collection. Everything is reasonably priced and everyone was friendly. A must stop place.
