About This Pub

Ah, the Southern Cross – it's one of those pubs that just makes you feel glad you stepped in, you know? From what I've gathered chatting about places like this, the food really steals the show; folks rave about the hearty breakfasts and burgers that are packed with flavour and won't break the bank. The staff are an absolute delight, always on hand without being over the top, which makes for a really enjoyable visit whether you're there for a quick drink or a full meal. It's super family-oriented and even welcomes dogs, plus they've got a cracking beer garden and all the sports action you could want, like the Lions tour or karaoke nights – it's buzzing in all the right ways. But let's be fair, it's not flawless; the overall buzz suggests there might be the odd slip-up with service or when it gets packed, and those varying opening times could catch you out if you're not checking first. Still, for a solid night out in Watford, it's a gem that I'd happily recommend, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – after all, it's the little things that make a pub memorable.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – from tasty vegetarian breakfasts to flame-grilled burgers, it's all about great flavours and brilliant value for your money.
  • The staff are top-notch, always friendly and attentive, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's a proper family and dog-friendly spot, with a relaxed atmosphere that's perfect for catching up with mates over a pint or watching live sports like the Women's Euros.
  • They've got lovely amenities, including a well-kept beer garden, ample parking, and even WiFi, so you can settle in for the long haul.
  • Live events like karaoke nights add a fun vibe, and it's conveniently located near Watford Junction for an easy visit.
Cons
  • While recent feedback has been glowing, the overall rating suggests there might be occasional off days with service or food that don't quite hit the mark for everyone.
  • Opening hours can seem a bit confusing with varying times listed, which might lead to a few surprises if you're planning a late-night stop.
  • As a busy pub, it could get a tad crowded during big events, making it tricky to find a seat or enjoy a quiet chat.
  • With moderate pricing, some might find the drinks or meals a smidge on the pricey side if you're popping in regularly.

I had an excellent vegetarian breakfast which was amazing value. I had a decaf cappuccino to go with it. Service was excellent and unobtrusive. Premises are charming with ample car parking.

Reviewing the pub First time visiting with friends and I must say the food provided to us by Jay was absolutely delicious. I opted for the flame grilled bacon and cheese burger and it didn't disappoint. The burger was actually flame grilled and had great flavour. Both drinks and food were very reasonable priced and if we don't Nd ourselves on the area again we will certainly return. many thanks for the great food Jay
