About This Pub
Ah, Smiths Arms in Beckwithshaw – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper country escape, nestled among the rolling hills of North Yorkshire. I've got to say, the team there really knows how to make you feel at home; they're polite, efficient, and go the extra mile, which makes for some lovely evenings out with friends or family. The menu's a treat too, packed with hearty pub favourites and fresh seasonal options that leave you satisfied – think delicious pork belly or garlic mushrooms that folks rave about. Plus, with a great range of drinks and that inviting beer garden for warmer days, it's easy to see why it's a go-to spot. On the flip side, though, it's not all perfect; a few recent chats mention grub that's come out a bit overcooked or glasses that weren't as clean as they'd like, which is a shame when you're expecting that reliable quality. Still, with its overall charm and efforts like supporting wildlife through their special ales, I'd say it's worth a visit – just keep an eye out and you'll likely have a cracking time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always with a smile and ready to make your visit memorable.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of drinks, from classic ales to something for every taste.
-
The food is generally spot on, with pub classics and seasonal specials that hit the spot – I hear the glazed pork belly and creamy garlic mushrooms are absolute winners.
-
It's a cosy spot in a picturesque village, perfect for a relaxed meal or celebrating with mates, and the outdoor areas are brilliant on a sunny day.
Cons
-
There have been a few complaints about cleanliness, like glasses turning up with lipstick stains, which can really put a dampener on things.
-
Food quality seems inconsistent at times; some dishes come out overcooked or not as fresh as you'd hope, based on recent visits.
-
It might not live up to expectations if you're relying on past experiences, as a couple of folks have noticed a dip in standards lately.

Staff are extremely polite, attentive, smiley and amiable. Good pub food and excellent selection of drinks. The outdoor areas are a wonderful addition for a warm sunny day. Thanks especially to Phil & Leanne for looking after us. See you again.
Very disappointed to have what we have previously known to be of good quality. The glassware had lipstick/ lip stains on them, all three and the replacement glassware was not much cleaner. We got asked how we would like our steak in the steak sandwich and it came over cooked chewy and appeared reheated. Tasteless and not good. Previous steak sandwiches here were lovely. The desert was also terrible. The apple tart pastry was incredibly undercooked and awful. It appeared to be microwaved. It was a huge disappointment of a meal which previously had been very enjoyable. I wanted to submit this feedback in email but I couldn't find an email address. It would need to be drastically turned around for me to return.
Usually The Smiths Arms is very good for food. We have been coming for years. Sadly this doesn’t seem to be the case anymore for the food. Our drinks glasses were served to us with lipstick marks on them and were clearly not clean. The food was very average tasting and didn’t appear to be made fresh. We ordered a steak sandwich and were asked how we wanted it cooked. To which we said medium / rare. It was served to us very well done (overcooked). The desert pastry for the apple crumble was raw and the Eton mess was a pile of slop on the plate. The staff are very nice and attentive but the quality of food has gone really downhill, which is a shame given the beautiful building and location. I hope they can turn this around and bring it back to its former glory. As it stands I would not return again until the standard improves.
Amazing food at this pub. I’d highly recommend the glazed pork belly as it was simply delicious, the starter of creamy garlic mushroom is also worth considering. Staff are incredibly friendly and the service is very efficient.
We had the most wonderful evening celebrating my grandfather’s 80th. The staff were attentive and very kind and the food was absolutely divine. Graham, Elaine and Jess made this such a wonderful experience and we will be returning without a doubt.
