About This Pub
Ah, the Squinting Cat – it's one of those pubs that really grows on you once you step inside, tucked away on the outskirts of Harrogate in a lovely countryside setting. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food steals the show with those flame-grilled flavours; people are raving about the burgers and steaks, and it's clear they've got a knack for getting things just right, like that perfectly cooked steak or those tasty chicken wings. The staff sound like absolute gems, always going the extra mile to make everyone feel at ease, which is especially nice if you're out with the family or little ones in tow – they've got soft play and outdoor spaces to keep things entertaining. Plus, with deals on drinks and community events, it's got that community spirit going for it. On the flip side, though, it's a bit of a letdown if you're a fan of proper cask ales, as they don't have any on tap, and the place can feel a touch too subdued for a proper pub crawl. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed day out or a family lunch, but if you're after something more energetic, you might want to look elsewhere. I'd say give it a go if you're in the area – it's got that warm, homely feel that makes for a pleasant visit.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think juicy burgers and succulent steaks cooked over an open fire, with rave reviews for dishes like steak flatbread and lasagna, making it a top choice for a hearty meal.
-
Staff are incredibly friendly and patient, especially with families and those with special needs, creating a welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for a relaxed get-together.
-
It's super family-friendly with facilities like soft play, outdoor areas, and even dog-friendly policies, plus a massive car park which is a real bonus in the countryside.
-
They've got some cracking deals on drinks and meals, and events like dog walks that add a fun community vibe.
-
With a solid 4.2 rating from loads of visitors, it's clear this place knows how to keep folks coming back for more.
Cons
-
It's a shame they don't have any handpulled cask beers on offer, which might leave traditional ale lovers feeling a bit disappointed and heading elsewhere.
-
The atmosphere can be a tad quiet at times, almost like a library, so if you're after a lively, buzzing pub night, it might not quite hit the mark.
-
Serving hours wrap up fairly early, especially on Sundays, which could be a downside if you're planning a late evening out.

Recent Reviews
I had walked about 7 miles on hottest day and was anticipating a grand, thirst quenching cask beer. With regret, despite its other obvious charms, this pub serves no handpulled cask beers so it was an easy quick evacuation as not my sort of pub. It does have a very big car park for plentiful parking and the grand decor was impressive. I was going to dine too, but with no cask on offer, I took my trade and money elsewhere.

Had a wonderful time at the Squinting Cat for a cheeky Friday lunch. Staff were incredibly patient, courteous, and friendly - I noticed a few carers were there with individuals with special needs, the staff took extra time whilst also still treating them like anyone else which was great/wholesome to see whilst I was at the bar ordering.
Really enjoyed my food, and the price was very fair (£11) for the amount/quality. Only negative is the Green King App wasn't working at the time, leaving me unable to order from my table - which isn't the fault of the restaurant so hasn't affected my rating.
Do hope to visit again. Thanks for a great lunch!
We come here on a Sunday every month and we’re always impressed with the food and customer service!
Tried the steak flatbread today and it was delicious, steak cooked to my liking! My sister had the chicken wings and she would highly recommend them also.
Really lovely staff, great service. Very tasty food the lasagna was one of the best I have had! Will be back 100%.
Booked a table, not really needed as it was lovely and quiet. Decided to have our first bar meal out since the pandemic began.
Staff were friendly, approachable and relaxed. Atmosphere was a bit like a library but we needed the peace and quiet ❤️
We ordered hand battered fish and chips (with peas), and loaded steak sunday. Tasty, good portions +price. Even got to try a unique cider whilst I was there. Well worth the walk over, we will be back again.. Great to find a welcoming local for us 🥰
Update 👀
We are now regulars, loving each dish we get & I'm trying pale ales and IPA guest ales each time I'm in. Not had one reaction to any of the dishes which are milk free (really badly intolerant to dairy protein), so for me this place is heaven!
Recent Update 2023
Still reaction free when having dishes, using my 20% off food discount is really easy. We struggle to go regularly due to my recent change in job, but hopefully this will change soon! Staff have changed but a few regular faces left. Nothing changed a lot, and service still really good!
