About This Pub

Ah, the Six Bells in Cliffe – it's one of those classic village pubs that's been around since the 16th century, and you can really feel that history when you step inside. From what I've gathered from folks' chats online, it's a gem for anyone popping by for a bite or a overnight, especially if you're tied up with something at Cooling Castle Barn – they've got this brilliant shuttle service that takes the stress out of getting there. The staff are absolute stars; they're quick to show you to your room, help with your bags, and make sure everything's just right, which really adds to the homely feel. The food's a highlight too – fresh, hearty dishes that hit the spot, and don't miss the breakfast if you're staying; it's top-notch and included in the deal. Plus, with live sports on the telly and all sorts of events going on, there's plenty to keep you entertained. But, let's be straight, it's not flawless – you might find yourself waiting a while for your meal to arrive, even on off-peak times, and that deposit they ask for when booking can feel a bit off-putting, like it's more suited to a fancy restaurant than a cosy pub. Overall, though, I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area; it's got that warm, community spirit that makes you want to come back, as long as you go in with realistic expectations.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • The food is fresh and tasty, with generous portions that leave you satisfied, and they even do a cracking breakfast if you're staying over.
  • It's got great rooms that are clean and comfortable, perfect for a quick overnight stay, especially if you're heading to a wedding at Cooling Castle Barn.
  • They offer a handy shuttle service to local events, which is a real bonus for getting around without the hassle.
  • There's always something on, like live sports on big screens or fun events, making it a lively spot in a quaint village setting.
Cons
  • Wait times for food can be a bit lengthy, even when it's not busy, which might put a dampener on your visit.
  • They ask for a deposit when booking, which feels a tad unusual for a pub, especially on quieter days.
  • Experiences can vary – some visits are spot on, but others might not live up to expectations, like with service snags.

Stayed 1 night before a wedding. The check in process is straight forward & staff take you to your room & help with luggage . Room was great with large on suite with corner bath separate shower aswell as the usual toilet & washbasin. We had an evening meal with was very enjoyable & super tasting. THE Breakfast is a great portion size had the full English absolutely top notch. The service from checking in, dinner, breakfast & checking out was superb. Special mention to the young lady who looked after us at breakfast was lovely. Thank you to all at The Six Bells.

Great pub in Cliffe, perfect stay for anyone going to Coolings Barn for a function, Gavin the owner runs a shuttle service for his guests staying in the 6 Bells Great staff in pub, Kayleigh was good host. The rooms are very clean, comfy beds, and they do a great breakfast for your hangovers the next day. Would definitely recommend this place also plenty of parking for free.

I didn’t stay here, so I can’t comment on the rooms. However, the service is excellent, though the wait for food / food preparation did take some time. This isn't a major issue since the food is fresh. My experience was mixed. On one weekend night, the food was outstanding—generous portions and freshly made. However, when I returned, I was disappointed. The portions had noticeably shrunk, and even the proper tea mugs were reduced to just a pathetic glass / sip horrible cups. It feels like there may have been a different chef during lunchtime. I plan to return in the summer when I visit the RSPB Cliffe Pools, and I will provide an updated review then.

Booked a table for lunch on a Monday. Even though they said they're really quiet on a Monday they required £5 deposit per person. Unheard of for a pub in the week, except for Christmas, some you guarantee with a credit card, which is more preferable. One of our party was ill and despite there still being 10 of us, they refused to refund the full deposit. This is totally out of order and no other venue I've been to has ever done this if one person is missing. I certainly will not be going back and that's generally party of 10+ they are missing out. Not like they were busy !!!!
