About This Pub

Ah, the Scotch Piper Inn – what a treat it is, tucked away in Lydiate near Liverpool, with its roots stretching back to 1320, making it the oldest pub in Lancashire. I have to say, it's got this warm, inviting feel that just draws you in, especially with the live music nights where they champion local musicians – nothing beats a spontaneous sing-along or a booked act on the weekends. The events are brilliant too; Monday's classic car club and Wednesday's long-running biker night add such a fun community spirit, and the drinks are always on point, paired with simple yet satisfying snacks like those award-winning cheeseboards. The staff really make the place shine with their attentive service, and it's ideal for a casual get-together with mates. On the flip side, though, the new rules on dogs have got some people a bit hot under the collar – it's understandable they're trying to keep things considerate, but it does feel a touch over the top for those who bring their furry friends. Plus, it fills up quickly, so plan ahead, and if you're hoping for a full meal, the limited options like just egg and bacon baps might not hit the spot. All in all, it's a solid choice for a good night out, with plenty of charm to outweigh the niggles, as long as you're up for a bit of hustle to get in.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got that wonderful historic charm, being the oldest pub in Lancashire since 1320 – you can really feel the character as soon as you walk in.
  • They've got a cracking atmosphere with live music sessions that support local talent, plus fun events like the classic car club on Mondays and biker nights on Wednesdays.
  • The drinks are spot on, with options like Shropshire Gold on tap, and simple but tasty snacks such as crisps, nuts, and award-winning cheeseboards.
  • Staff are always attentive and polite, making you feel right at home, and it's a lovely spot for gatherings with friends or family.
  • With a solid overall rating, it's clear most folks have a great time here, enjoying the rear beer garden and the welcoming vibe.
Cons
  • The new dog rules have stirred up a bit of controversy – while it's nice they're being considerate, some feel they're a tad too strict, like no dogs after 8 pm or in carpeted areas, which has upset a few regular visitors.
  • It can get incredibly busy, especially in the evenings, so arriving early is a must if you want to snag a good spot without the crowds.
  • Food options are pretty limited; they mainly do things like egg and bacon baps, which are good but might leave you wanting more variety if you're after a proper meal.

Great pub. Glad they’ve clamped down on the dogs. At the end of the day it’s a pub not a dogs home. Nice to be able to have a pint without tripping over dogs or having to put up with the smell of them or barking. Why do you have to bring a dog to the pub anyway? Should have to sit outside. Anyway, this is a lovely little pub and well worth a visit.

It's one of my favourite locations. I've been coming for a while, It gets very, very busy, though, so I'd reccomend you arrive early in the evening. dog friendly, but the new rules of no dogs after 8 pm and no dogs in the room with carpet are a bit ridiculous.... 100% agree with no barking dogs and no dogs on the seats as quite frankly it's not a home and disrespectful, distracting and dirty but I'm going to sit my Medical alert Assistance dog wherever is safest for him, the staff know him by name and seeing as it gets so busy, if it means sitting in the room with carpet I'm going to sit there... I'm not going to make my boy sit in a room where he risks being stood on while he works. He is probably one of the politest customers there is, never is rude, never answers back, never starts an argument... and the staff all seem to love him😍❤️

Honestly, the sheer audacity of the new "Dog Rules" here has left me utterly fuming. As a responsible dog owner, I am accustomed to being mindful of others, but this list reads like it was written by someone who actively despises our furry companions. "Please be considerate"? Excuse me, but the tone of the entire sign is anything but considerate! It's accusatory and frankly, quite rude. The subsequent litany of demands feels like we're being treated like unruly children, not valued patrons. The Scotch used to be a really nice pub that gave a nice welcoming atmosphere. We enjoyed stopping off here after a long dog walk as it's in the perfect area. From looking at the points made we know there's one staff member (Blonde Lady) who is less than welcoming to dogs so I guess she's the one who typed this up. No dogs that Bark? I'm sorry should I ask my dog to 'Meow' instead? "It drives some people insane" - just feels rude and hostile. This is a blatant and insulting generalisation about dogs. If they can't tolerate the occasional natural sound a dog might make, perhaps this lady should consider a different line of business. The arbitrary time restrictions on Friday and Saturday evenings – feel unnecessarily restrictive and unwelcoming. No dogs after 8pm inside? Exactly what harm are they doing after 8pm? The begrudging "Thanks" at the end does little to soften the harsh and negative tone of the entire message also. It feels more like an afterthought, a mere formality after a list of demands that paints dog owners as a nuisance Don't think I'll be coming back again as it all of a sudden doesn't seem welcoming. Good Job we have the likes of The Running Horses who will now be getting my custom. Especially on a Friday and Saturday night.

They only do egg and bacon baps but they are good. Shropshire Gold was on tap and there was a glowing fire from the log burner. Staff were attentive and polite.

A beautiful venue to have an intimate gathering of friends & family, celebrating love of our beautiful mates. Cannot say anything better about service of the staff and the owner, they were lovely and so kind. Drinks were also delicious!
