About This Pub
Ah, Saint & Sinner – what a gem of a pub tucked away in the heart of St Albans! I have to say, it's got that perfect mix of history and fun, with its beautiful 18th-century building that's been lovingly brought back to life. You'll love the cosy nooks, the outdoor terrace for sunnier days, and the buzz of live music or a game of shuffleboard when things get lively. The food scene is pretty appealing too; think delicious nachos with a zingy sauce, classic lunches, and even a Sunday roast that sounds tempting – though I've heard mixed things, with some rave reviews and others moaning about disappointing quality or items running out. The drinks menu is a winner, packed with craft beers and cocktails that go down a treat. On the flip side, service can be a tad laid-back; it's friendly enough, but there have been tales of ignored complaints, like a freezing cold table that put a dampener on things. And while they've tried to make it accessible, the old building does throw up a few challenges, so it's worth checking in advance if that's a concern. Overall, it's a solid spot for a casual meet-up or a celebration, but go in with realistic expectations – it's got heaps of charm, but like any good pub, it's not flawless. I'd still recommend giving it a go; you might just find your new favourite local haunt!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic building is absolutely charming, with its grade II listed status giving it that real old-school vibe that makes you feel like you're stepping back in time.
-
They've got a fantastic range of food and drinks, from tasty brunch favourites and artisan pizzas to fresh cocktails and craft beers – perfect for a relaxed catch-up or a lively night out.
-
Staff are generally friendly and helpful, making you feel welcome whether you're popping in for a quick coffee or booking the private space for a special occasion.
-
It's dog-friendly and has an outdoor terrace, which is great for enjoying a pint in the fresh air, and they've made efforts to be accessible, though it's not perfect.
-
The atmosphere is spot on for events, with options like shuffleboard, live music, and private hire that make it ideal for birthdays or get-togethers.
Cons
-
Food quality can be hit or miss; some dishes like the nachos are brilliant, but others, such as roasts, have fallen short with complaints about availability and overall dismal taste.
-
Service might feel a bit unhurried or inconsistent at times, with stories of complaints being ignored, like that chilly marble table that spoiled an otherwise pleasant evening.
-
Due to the building's age and listed status, accessibility isn't fully sorted for everyone, so it might not be the easiest spot if you have certain mobility needs.
-
It can get busy, especially on evenings or weekends, which might mean waits for food or drinks, and the portions sometimes leave you wanting a bit more bang for your buck.

Lovely building, busy on a Friday evening. The allocated real marble top table was cold enough to take the heat out of the hottest main course - our complaints were ignored so we moved to a table with a wooden top. Service was otherwise pleasant, unhurried and helpful. Starters of olives £5 and sourdough £7.75 were good. Pizzas £16.50 and £14.25 were average and not generous in size. The prawn linguini £17.00 had undercooked and clumped pasta, was small enough to be a starter, and was too oily. Add two bottles of wine at £26.75 each and two beers totalling £11.70 and the total dinner bill for three felt overpriced at £129.
We hired the cocktail room for my dad’s 70th birthday. We had are own bar With a buffet as well! Amazing food and drinks. Outstanding buffet. Friendly and helpful staff. Would 100% recommend booking this place again for party’s or drinks.
We recently visited the Saint & Sinner pub in St Albans, and it left a great impression on us! First off, the nachos were fantastic. The sauce that accompanied them was absolutely delicious — rich, flavorful, and just the right amount of kick. However, we do wish there were a few more nachos on the plate to fully enjoy that tasty sauce.
One of the standout features of the pub was its decor. The walls were adorned with an array of fascinating pictures, each one more interesting than the last. It created an enjoyable atmosphere, and we found ourselves taking moments to appreciate the artwork while relaxing.
Overall, the Saint & Sinner offers a lovely spot with great food and a cool vibe. It's definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a relaxed and enjoyable place to spend some time in St Albans.

Food is good, menu varied enough for most tastes, my food order came in good time. Staff were friendly, laid back in terms of service but polite and served within a few minutes at the bar, although it was very quiet (Thursday evening). The dining and drinking spaces inside and outside are really nice, eclectic, comfortable and relaxing, toilets modern and clean.
The Peahen nearby, same chain, had noticeably unfriendly staff who didn't want to be there, will do a separate review for that venue.
Absolutely TERRIBLE food. We came for a roast at 4pm on a Sunday, to be told that only 2 roasts are left. Then we were told after ordering that in fact zero roasts were left. Instead we had a mixture of orders- pasta, schnitzel, steak and kids pizza. The quality of the food was absolutely dismal.
The kids pizza was pure cardboard. The garlic bread was awful.
The steak had to be sent back because it wasn’t cooked enough…. Only to get a new steak back exactly the same, if not worse! We asked for it medium and it was hardly cooked at all. By this point we gave up with that meal.
Our glasses or plates weren’t cleaned off the table at all throughout the meal. We had to put it on a table next to us.
The manager came over and took ALL of the food off the bill because we showed him the evidence and he agreed it had all been a shambles.
It seemed that absolutely nobody in there could be bothered and the chefs have a lot to answer for because their food was utter crap.
Never ever again.
It needs ALOT of sorting out that place.
