About This Pub

Ah, Waterend Barn – it's one of those Wetherspoon pubs that just hits the spot for a laid-back day out in St Albans. From what I've gathered from the buzz around, the food really shines; whether it's a satisfying fish and chips after exploring the cathedral or a quick breakfast that arrives piping hot and tastes spot on, it's clear this place knows how to deliver value without breaking the bank. The atmosphere is another winner – imagine settling into a beautifully kept old building with charming historical touches that give it that authentic pub feel, and the team behind the bar are genuinely helpful, adding to the warm welcome. But, let's keep it real, it does get mobbed at peak times like lunch, so you might find yourself in a bit of a queue or squeezed in, and there could be small niggles like not always having easy access to water, which might put a dampener on things for a few. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for anyone after a no-fuss spot to enjoy a drink and a meal, and with those high ratings, I'd say it's worth popping in for a proper British pub experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is spot on – think hearty fish and chips or a cracking breakfast that's bang for your buck, especially after a wander around the local sights.
  • It's got that cosy, tavern-like vibe with beautiful old building features and some neat local history displays that make you feel right at home.
  • Prices are dead affordable, offering brilliant value without skimping on quality, which is perfect for a casual catch-up over drinks or a meal.
  • Staff are always friendly and helpful, making sure everything runs smoothly, even when things get a bit lively.
Cons
  • It can get pretty packed during lunchtimes, so you might end up hunting for a table or waiting a tad longer for your order.
  • There might be the odd hiccup with simple things like getting access to water, which could be a minor annoyance for some folks with specific needs.

My favourite place for fish and chips is a wetherspoons and they certainly didn't disappoint here. After a whole morning of walking around the Cathedral and the market I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Gets very busy at lunchtime and I think we had the last table available but still the food came out in good time.

Beautiful old building, it's well maintained, the decorations and interesting well presented local history displays. The staff are both friendly and helpful, the food is filling and well prepared. I have a problem eating so it's extremely important for me to have access to water, which can be a problem in other family friendly restaurants, but I feel confident in spoons. The price is very competitive especially if you can enjoy the afternoon special offers, I normally order a large fish and chips, again because I know I can eat it safely, the price includes a drink and should you like a hot drink you can have a free refill. All in all I hope that they continue and grow their business.

The price-quality ratio is amazing. Yes, it is definitely not fine dining, but the quality of the food and drinks are definitely beyond their price-point. Add to that the very cozy atmosphere and the tavern/inn vibe they’ve got and one has no reason not to like this place!

Popped in here for breakfast on a Saturday morning. Ordered on the app and only a few minutes later did the drinks arrive. The food arrived about 15-20mins later. Delicious and warm, this is a place for a meal that is value for money.
