About This Pub

Ah, the Royal Standard – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Headington, Oxford. I've heard from folks who've been there that it's got this lovely, homely vibe where you can pop in for a pint and end up chatting away for hours, maybe even having a go at darts with some of the regulars. The food's a real winner too, with hearty options that leave you satisfied, and they've got all the sports action covered, from Premier League footy to rugby tours, which is perfect if you're into that sort of thing. It's also spot on for families or if you've got your dog in tow, with ample space and those little extras that make everyone feel welcome. On the downside, though, it doesn't quite match up to its 'royal' billing if you're after something posh – it's more about solid, no-fuss enjoyment than wow factor. And while the prices are fair, they might feel a tad steep for a longer session, plus things wind down earlier than you'd hope on quieter nights. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening; you'd probably have a cracking time if you keep your expectations realistic and go for the good grub and friendly chats.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • Fantastic food options, like those stacked burgers and tasty cocktails, that really hit the spot after a long day.
  • Super friendly staff who go the extra mile, ensuring everyone has a great time, whether you're there for a quick drink or a full meal.
  • It's brilliant for sports fans, with live screenings of everything from football to rugby, and even fun games like darts to join in on.
  • Family and dog-friendly vibes, with plenty of space and thoughtful touches like water bowls for furry friends, making it inclusive for all.
Cons
  • It might not live up to its grand name if you're expecting something fancy or regal – it's more of a straightforward, cosy spot than a luxurious venue.
  • Prices are on the moderate side, which could add up if you're planning a big night out with a group, so it's worth keeping an eye on the bill.
  • The operating hours wrap up a bit early on some days, so if you're after late-night antics, you might need to head elsewhere after closing time.

Fantastic pub. Came in for some food and ended up staying for 2 hours playing darts with some of the locals. Great day out definitely worth a visit 🍻🎯

The standard is less royal than advertised. No queen, no king, no monarchy. However, learning the truth of it being a pub, I understood that my expectations would be difficult to meet so I changed them. My new expectations seemed to be adequately fulfilled.

We went there for our Christmas Do as we work for the British Heart Foundation ❤️. We all had a fab night the food was yummy and the Cherry Bakewell cocktail was amazing. James and Sophie were fab and nothing was too much for them. Thank you so much Sam

This pub has had a huge and well overdue refurbishment since I last visited quite a few years ago. Although the layout is very much the same, there is adequate space for pushchairs, wheelchairs and mobility scooters between tables too. Gone are the grimey tacky furniture and bar surfaces that were once the norm. Customers can enjoy meals and drinks outdoors too, which is adequately lit up at night. There is also a big screen for watching popular sporting events ideally situated in the lower level at the rear of the pub where you'll find a pool table and a further addition of tables and seating. This area leads out to the garden where blankets and throws are provided at the door for your warmth and comfort. I didn't have anything to eat on this visit but did notice the extensive choice displayed on the menu boards. Dog bowls and treats are also available too. The clientele fully represents the residents, workers and senior citizens of the local area. I look forward to visiting again soon! 8/05/2023 The pub was almost empty. The service was OK but the steak and Ale pie was pretty awful as clearly evident from the picture.
