About This Pub
Ah, the Rose of York – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper hidden gem in Richmond, you know? I've heard from mates that it's brilliant for a laid-back afternoon, especially if you're tucking into one of their legendary Sunday roasts; the food's spot on, with tender meats, fresh veg, and those homemade Yorkshire puds that really hit the spot. The staff are an absolute delight, always on hand with a warm welcome and efficient service that makes you want to linger. Plus, that riverside location is just gorgeous for soaking up the scenery without any distractions. On the other hand, it can be a bit on the quiet side sometimes, which is great if you're after peace and quiet, but if you're in the mood for a lively singalong or a bit more buzz, it might not quite deliver. The decor's charming in an old-school way, but it's not for everyone – think polished copper and dated vibes that are well-maintained yet feel a touch outdated. All in all, it's a solid choice for a genuine pub experience, especially for families or anyone wanting a hassle-free meal, but it's worth knowing it keeps things simple with limited drinks and no frills, so you can decide if that suits your fancy.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The location is absolutely spot on, right by the river with lovely views of the surrounding trees – it's a real treat for a scenic pint or meal.
-
Their Sunday roasts are a highlight, with home-cooked style beef, pork, or turkey, complete with seasonal veg, Yorkshire puds, and even veggie options, making it a go-to for a hearty family lunch.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always ready with a smile and top-notch service that makes you feel welcome from the moment you walk in.
-
It's got that authentic, old-school charm with no distractions like TVs, which is perfect if you're after a quiet, genuine pub vibe for chats and relaxation.
-
Booking is a breeze, and it's easy to snag a table even on busy Sundays when other spots are packed.
Cons
-
It can feel a bit too quiet at times, especially on off-peak days, which might not suit if you're hoping for a lively, buzzing atmosphere.
-
The decor is quite dated and traditional, which some might find a tad worn, even if it's well-kept – it's not the most modern spot out there.
-
Drink options are limited to Samuel Smith's brews and a few house wines, so if you're after something like a Bloody Mary or more variety, you might be disappointed.
-
There's no music or extra entertainment, which could make it seem a little dull for those wanting a more upbeat experience.
-
The overall setup feels a bit old-school in places, like the lack of TVs in the rooms if you're staying over, though that's part of its charm for some.

Wish I could give a higher rating, given it super location. Dropped in for a drink and a bite.
Huge pub, empty, just 4 customers inside. Dated decor but well maintained, toilet probably the best maintained, polished copper pipes etc remarkable.
Garden on other side. Huge car park.
Sunday roast was amazing! Great pub, beatify located, with views over river and surrounding trees. Its nice and quiet, authentic interiors, no TVs. We easily got places on Sunday afternoon, where everywhere else was fully booked. And the food was just great!
This place is a gem, highly recommended!
Despite the slightly ramshackle set-up (or maybe just deliberately old-school?*) we had a very enjoyable family sunday roast here on Mothers Day, sitting in the sunshine. The staff were very friendly, polite and helpful. 2 adult roast lunches, 2 child half-portion roasts, and 4 drinks (1 bitter shandy and the rest soft drinks), came to £72. A very good roast beef and a pleasant, short walk away from the crowds.
*NB no low or no alcohol lager available and no ales. None of the chicken dishes on the menu were available.
Brought my mum here for Mother’s Day and had the loveliest time. Ash and Ana provided first class customer service, they were so friendly and attentive. The Sunday roast was delicious, and tasted home cooked, and like real care had been taken preparing the food. We got in early so the pub was lovely, calm and quiet. Enjoyed a drink in the lovely sun trap beer garden after dinner. Couldn’t recommend it more and can’t wait to come back!
Samuel Smith pubs so no branded pints etc. was a little disappointed to find that unfortunately they don’t serve bloody Mary’s. Staff are incredible , attentive and friendly! Wish the pub had a bit more of an atmosphere, we stepped in on a Sunday and it was super quiet! Literally. A bit of music would go a long way. Dog friendly, lovely garden. Shame more people don’t know about this place, a short walk from the bustling Richmond hill . Needs an injection of classic pub, feels more like a club / carvery.
