About This Pub

Ah, the Rose and Crown – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of a good British local, with its rich history dating back to the days of Dick Turpin and a prime spot near the woods of Forty Hall. I have to say, the food stands out as a real winner; their Sunday roasts are spot on, full of flavour and just the thing after a brisk walk, and the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, which is always a plus when you're popping in with the dog or for a quiz night. On the flip side, it can get absolutely packed, leading to waits at the bar or service that's a bit slower than you'd hope, and while the prices are fair for what you get, they might feel a touch steep if you're just after a quick bite. All in all, it's a gem for a relaxed catch-up with mates, but I'd recommend booking in advance to avoid any hiccups and make the most of that charming, community feel.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Sunday roasts are an absolute treat – think tender beef, crispy potatoes, and portions that leave you feeling well looked after.
  • It's got that lovely historical charm, with ties to Dick Turpin and a cosy spot nestled near Forty Hall Estate, perfect for a post-walk pint.
  • Staff are always friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home, and it's great that dogs are welcome too.
  • They've got a good selection of locally brewed beers and fun events like quiz nights, which add a real community vibe.
  • Being family-run gives it a warm, personal touch that makes every visit feel special.
Cons
  • It can get incredibly busy, especially on weekends or for events like Father's Day, which sometimes leads to slower service.
  • Prices are on the higher side for a pub meal, so it might not be the best spot if you're watching your wallet.
  • A few folks have mentioned that desserts aren't always up to scratch, like the Eton mess being a bit skimpy on the fruit.
  • Booking ahead is essential as walk-ins can be tricky, and if things go wrong with reservations, it might leave you disappointed.
  • Service can be hit or miss when they're short-staffed, so you might have to wait a tad longer for your round.

Have been for a Sunday roast a few times and as I think they do the tastiest one I’ve had! Starters and desserts are also great. Staff are always lovely and give good service. You do have to book in advance as it fills up quickly

Disappointing Father’s Day Experience – Poor Customer Service We visited the Rose and Crown for Father’s Day lunch after calling the day before to check availability. I was told they were fully booked but that if we arrived around 12pm, we could likely get a walk-in table in the garden. Based on this, we travelled from central London to Enfield for a Father’s Day lunch. After nearly an hour’s journey with our 2-year-old, we arrived, got a garden table, and were then told we couldn’t order from the main menu because we hadn’t booked—only starters were available. Not exactly ideal for a Father’s Day meal. When I raised this with the manager (a dark-haired woman), she was incredibly abrupt and dismissive, implying I was lying and insisting her staff would never have said that. I had to show my phone call history to prove I’d spoken to someone the day before. No apology was offered, nor any sympathy for the fact we had travelled a long way based on her team’s advice. In contrast, the younger staff who answered the phone and served drinks were polite and courteous. Unfortunately, the manager's attitude completely overshadowed this—rude, unprofessional, and completely unwilling to acknowledge the mistake or inconvenience caused. If there truly was no way to accommodate us, the proper approach would have been a sincere apology and some understanding—not treating a customer as if they’re being dishonest. In short: If you're considering visiting this pub without a reservation—even after calling ahead—don’t bother. You may end up with a wasted journey and an unwelcoming reception.

First time here for a roast and will definitely visit again! The roast beef was delicious and expertly cooked and the potatoes were light and crispy. The kids roast was the perfect size too! The desserts were not as good - the Eton mess was mostly cream and a bit scant on the fruit. The bread a butter pudding was okay but not earth shattering. The roasts were outstanding though!

Great lunch stop on the way back to the airport. We were looking for a country pub for lunch and this one didn’t disappoint as a wonderful historical place to stop. Food was great. Plentiful, delicious and filling. Service was a little slow but friendly, it’s a big place and I think they need more servers! Wife loved the halloumi and corn ‘ribs’… my fish and chips were just right, great fish and normal British chips.
