About This Pub

You know, chatting about the Red Cow feels like sharing stories over a pint – it's this classic pub in Smethwick that's been a local favourite since the 1930s, dishing out hearty meals and a proper welcoming atmosphere. The staff really shine through, always making sure you're comfortable and treated like an old mate, and when the food hits the mark, it's brilliant – think flavour-packed mixed grills or curries that could win you over in a flash. They've got that nice touch with fresh, local ingredients and some cracking deals to keep things affordable. But, let's be straight, it's not all roses; I've heard a few tales of the grub not quite living up to expectations lately, with some meals turning out bland or even a bit off, especially for takeaways. Still, with plenty of positive vibes overall, it's worth popping in if you're nearby – just keep an eye out for the odd off day and maybe go for a dine-in rather than a dash-and-grab. All in all, it's got that timeless appeal that makes it a solid choice for a relaxed night out, as long as you go in with a bit of an open mind.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They serve up some proper tasty grub when it's on form, like the mixed grills and curries that have left many chuffed.
  • It's a historic spot, family-run since 1930, which gives it that lovely, traditional Black Country charm.
  • With weekly special offers and a focus on fresh, local ingredients, it's a great place for a good-value meal or takeaway.
Cons
  • Food quality can be a bit hit or miss lately, with some reports of bland or off-tasting dishes that don't live up to the hype.
  • Takeaway orders have had their fair share of disappointments, like one recent curry that was a real letdown.
  • There might be inconsistencies in the overall experience, as a few visits have fallen short of the high standards it's known for.

Ordered a takeaway from here recently and it was honestly the worst curries I’ve ever eaten! Had a meal delivered from here about 12 months ago and was fantastic. I don’t know what’s gone on since but it was like ordering from a completely different place!! We had chicken balti and a chicken tikka masala. I’m not sure if chef dropped the salt shaker by accident but wow it took about 3l of water after to stop the dry mouth. The chicken was like rubber, at one point my partner was questioning if I’d tried to be a cheapskate and microwaved an Asda curry it was that had. The rice was ok.. heads up though the pilau rice is Matar Pulao (for white people it contains peas). Naan bread was standard, and had better from a 3 for £1 shop up cape. We also had some chips, which I’m not sure if the driver had a munch on in his journey. As you only get half a bag! Definitely wouldn’t recommend going and we won’t be going back ever again! There’s much better places about and think they just survive on a past reputation of doing good grills.

We have been visiting this place since 2018. The place to go for mixed grills. But what has happened recently with the quality? Our last visit (01/01/2024), there was definitely something wrong with the normal quality. The food was unfortunately both bland and tasted off. This is not normal for this establishment. My dining guests who consumed this complained of upset stomach issues (red meat and poultry). The seafood which I ate was definitely not good and tasted bad/off. Very disappointing, possibly we had a bad batch or dare we say re-heated food? Don’t think we will return which is a great shame.

This place was beyond incredible!!! We ordered the Red cow Mixed Grill and the selection of food was phenomenal. The flavours of each of the foods was distinct and delicious. The service was extremely friendly and everyone who worked there was brilliant. I highly suggest booking a table beforehand on the weekend because we went the night before and it was packed. Overall, I highly suggest this restaurant for a an incredible meal and a fun time!!!

Went on a Thursday evening to the Red cow. Thought the worst as there was 1 table occupied by diners. How wrong we were! We went for the ‘fat cow’ chilli chips, masala chips, lollipop chicken, chilli lollipops and 3 naans. We asked for the chips and naans to be upgraded on the fat cow as it only comes with plain but it was lost in translation so we got 3 plain naans and 2 chips additional to what we wanted. The fat cow grill itself was sensational. Lamb chops - great taste, perfect amount of charring. All the chicken was juicy and full of flavour. Fish pakora - nice light batter, lots of meaty fish. The chilli chips were unreal, so so good! Definitely recommend them with the chilli lollipops. Certainly no scrimping on the portions! The only slight criticism is the grill wasn’t sizzling when it came out but it was on a oven tray as it was so big! It says on the menu it serves 8-10, there was 5 of us and we were all stuffed. Would definitely go back, be great to go when it’s busy. One of the best mixed grills we’ve all had, up there with Champys, new hen and chickens etc. Update… we went back for our Xmas mixy, again quiet inside in the dining area but the mixy was first class. Had the £42 fat cow again. Was 6 of us, with 2 cobras to top it off we were all stuffed. The chilli chips and chilli lollipop are a must. Chips are battered and covered in chilli sauce…. Unbeatable! Football was on prime too! Thanks red cow for rounding off this year with a class mixy!
