About This Pub

Ah, Raven's Cliff by Marston's Inns – it's one of those places that feels like a reliable old mate when you're after a decent hotel with a pub vibe in the Motherwell area. From what folks are saying, the rooms are a real highlight; they're spacious, spotlessly clean, and come with comfy beds that leave you feeling refreshed in the morning. The staff get a big thumbs up too – always friendly and ready to make you feel at home, which really sets the tone for a pleasant stay. And let's not forget the food; the pub classics, fresh pizzas, and that ace breakfast menu have people raving, especially if you're travelling with the family. Plus, being so close to the M8 means it's a handy base for nipping off to Glasgow or Edinburgh for some culture and shopping. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing. A few have mentioned that the outside areas could use a tidy-up, with things like cigarette litter making the first impression less than ideal. Service-wise, it can be inconsistent; some have had trouble with group bookings or simple things like getting enough towels, which is a bit of a letdown when you're trying to relax. Overall, with a solid 4.2 rating, it's clear this place does a lot right, but if you're planning a visit, I'd say go in with realistic expectations – it's got that warm, homely charm, but like any spot, it has its off days. Still, for a straightforward, affordable option with good grub and a welcoming atmosphere, it's worth considering for your next getaway.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The rooms are clean, spacious, and really comfortable, with great beds that make for a good night's sleep.
  • Staff are friendly and welcoming, always ready with a warm hello and helpful service.
  • Food options are spot on, with classic pub dishes, fresh pizzas, and a kids' menu that keeps everyone happy, plus a lovely breakfast to start the day.
  • Free parking is a bonus, and it's conveniently located near the M8, making it easy to pop over to Glasgow or Edinburgh for a bit of exploring.
  • The bar and restaurant have a nice vibe, with a good selection of drinks and meals that hit the spot after a long day.
Cons
  • Some areas around the hotel could do with a bit more upkeep, like the entrance which might be littered and not as tidy as you'd hope.
  • Service can be hit or miss; for instance, sorting out bookings for larger groups hasn't always gone smoothly based on a few experiences.
  • Little oversights like not having enough towels in the rooms can put a dampener on things, especially if you're settling in late.
  • It seems like the overall experience might vary depending on when you visit, with some stays being top-notch and others falling a bit short.

We went as a bus trip and never again will we stay at this hotel. We went for 2 nights the hotel was grand the staff on the 1st night a man and a woman were lovely. Next morning we had breakfast service and food was lovely but that’s where it ended. We asked could we book 35 in for dinner and we were told yes that’s grand. When we went for dinner the staff and changed 4 young girls and a woman . We have never been treated so bad we waited 2 hours on food but we never complained then they made some people pay twice when asked why they were made to feel stupid. My son ordered his food paid when ordering then when he got the burger it was pink so he sent it back the next burger was grand and they ate it when he went to leave 1 of the girls grabbed him by the arm and told him he had to pay he said he had but she insisted so he paid again as he thought he was beening charged for the 3rd burger. When people ordered drinks they were trying to charge for doubles but they weren’t doubles. The attitude of the evening staff was awful at 9.30 a couple in there 80s was told to get to there bed when they went to Order a drink. They then said they were closeing and we all needed to leave which we did. There was seat outside and some people were sat there talking when 2 young staff members came out and told every1 to get of the seats and go to there hotel rooms when questioned why the older staff member told us to do whatever the fxxk we wanted then went in and slammed the door. We all headed to our rooms. Then on the Sunday morning when we went for breakfast we where told that no breakfast would be provided as 1 of our party was supposed to have spat on a staff member which I can assure you did not happen and when we explained what happened the night before and my son showed his banking app of where he was charged twice they refunded it and apologised to him. We don’t think the chef had turned up as we over heard the staff on the Saturday say he had a hissy fit. But with elderly people and diabetics in our group this was no way to be treated when we had already paid for breakfast. If they don’t want big groups then they shouldn’t take the booking we will never be back.

Stayed one night had a meal in the restaurant. The room was very clean and bed was comfortable. The restaurant looked like it had a busy day.

The hotel was very nice and specious and very clean. Great sized bathroom and shower was very good. The bar was very nice, the staff were very nice and welcoming. Our meal in the evening was great and the variety was excellent, as was our breakfast. Our overall experience was first class.

Staff friendly, room comfortable, food good. But despite having a family room booked which had plenty beds and extra pillows, we only had 1 towel in the room. We didnt discover this until late and i didnt want to then leave my child alone in the room in the dark to walk across the road to the pub to ask for more towels ( as if you take the key out the electicity goes off ) and in the morning we had to be away quickly so we didnt have time to go then. The food was nice but noone came back to take our dessert order or check if we had wanted anything else, it was a friday night and quite busy ( we have stayed before and it was much busier) we couldnt get anyones attention as staff were busy serving plates, we waited quite a while but then got too tired and left. Had ordered a meal to leave room for dessert so ended up stuck in a room all night with no food and hungry. Stay was fine but these things made it much less enjoyable

I really hoped to enjoy our stay, however a few things let it down. Check in was straightforward enough however the accommodation is in need of attention. The front doors to the accommodation is littered with cigarette ends. Smoking in this area is encouraged with the placement of two bins. Patrons frequently have to walk past people who are smoking, not only into the accommodation but also the restaurant. The vestibule area constantly stinks of smoke. The inner key activated security door does not work ( lock is physically damaged) Having to present the key card three times to get into room is a pain. The room was (117) grubby. The bathroom extractor fan is completly ineffective; 5 min shower and everything is dripping wet. It is also evident that guests have been smoking in rooms with cigarette ends discarded all along the exterior of the hotel. Every morning disturbed at 6am with trades persons stamping about whom seem to be the main proportion of clients. We had one meal in the restaurant, with the expectation of having more. It was mediocre at best, Steak and ale pie was tasteless, microwaved and very litte steak, the portion of gravy was akin to brown water, all in all an expensive portion of chips. On the outside it looks like a nice place to visit and from the promotional material, however on this occasion the experience justified the low cost.
