About This Pub

You know, when you're out and about looking for a good pub, it's all about that balance of a cracking atmosphere, decent grub, and staff who make you feel like you're catching up with old mates. The Elephant at the Market in Newbury really delivers on that front – it's got this charming, homely vibe with little elephant-themed touches that bring a smile, and the menu is packed with pub favourites done just right, like their grills and burgers that leave you satisfied. The drinks selection is spot on too, with expertly poured ales and lagers that pair perfectly with a lazy afternoon or evening catch-up. Plus, being dog-friendly means it's ideal for those walks in the area followed by a well-deserved pint. On the flip side, if you're tempted to book a room for the night, it's worth noting that there might be the odd hiccup with what's promised versus what you get, so perhaps give it a quick check beforehand. All in all, it's a solid spot for a relaxed get-together, and while it's not flawless, the positives far outweigh any minor niggles, making it a go-to for anyone in Newbury after a proper pub experience.

Had a fantastic experience at The Elephant in Newbury! The food was absolutely delicious, the drinks were spot on, and the atmosphere was just what we were after. The service really stood out — Harry and Miguel were especially brilliant, so friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. They really made the visit feel special. Highly recommend if you’re looking for great food, drinks, and top-notch service. Will definitely be back!

Great meal out at the elephant in the market I love the decor and how dainty it is with all the little elephants. My server Jess was very knowable about the food and drinks and did a great job with service. No complaints and the food was delicious.

Everyone was polite, professional, well informed, affable, and courteous. We loved the old feel of the place, even the slanting floor! Our room was spacious, clean and neat, the beds were comfortable. We slept soundly! Along with the charm of the square, and the town, we had the best experience we could have ever hoped for. Our sincerest thanks to everyone!

Arrived here around dinner time, welcomed quickly and showned to our room, First impression...weren't impressed, we had booked a deluxe double and could tell this was not the pictures that are located under deluxe double on booking.com but that of the cosy double! Upon asking the receptionist, she assured us we were definitely in a deluxe double. The room we was in 'flora' had a strong sewage like smell that just did not go away and came in waves, it got to the point I could not stand it any longer and went down to the reception to see if they had another room available, the gentleman I spoke with was super friendly and helpful, he couldn't personally smell the smell but did offer to move us upstairs. Arriving at said room 'pom' we where shocked to see almost a mirror image of the 'deluxe double' photos that we had originally booked (slightly different lay out so my guess is it's the room opposite 'pom')! The gentleman even joked about this room having a bigger bed! When I mentioned this room being essentially the one in the photos on booking.com, he disagreed. However, I have checked and confirmed to myself that I am right. (The pillows on the walls were missing, but the bed and appliances were all the same as the picture) The building definitely needs attention, cracks in the walls, and some parts have minor chips/mini holes. The wallpaper is striping away from the walls, which I can only imagine would be due to damp. We wouldn't personally stay here again but just be sure to check your rooms when arriving, if it wasn't for the smell in the first room we would never have thought any different as we took the word of the hotel and we would have paid 'deluxe double' prices for 'cosy double' standards. The next morning we had breakfast, which honestly in my opinion if I had a choice to eat breakfast there again I would personally not, the sausage and bacon was nice although the fat on the bacon was more burnt then crisp, the beans and fried egg was a little bland I feel like something definitely could have been added to them and the mushroom where so shrivelled up I could barely put them on my fork. Overall, I would say I did not have a restful pleasant stay, unfortunately.

Went here on a Tuesday evening, Kyle was our server and he was amazing! So helpful and friendly and just up for a giggle which was really refreshing! We had the Camembert to start and the steak and mini pie and bacon cheeseburger for the main and a cheesecake for dessert. I cannot fault any of it, all of it was so good, and the portion sizes were so good we had enough to take home! The cocktail was lovely and so was the rosè! We will definitely be returning!😊
