About This Pub

You know, when you step into the Old Ship in Richmond, it's like walking into that classic British pub you've always imagined – all cosy nooks, a great selection of ales, and a menu full of seasonal treats that really celebrate local producers. I love how they've nailed the food side of things; it's proper grub that makes you want to dive right in, whether you're sharing plates with friends or tucking into a Sunday roast. The drinks are spot on too, with everything from well-kept beers to a nice range of wines and spirits, and it's fantastic for catching live sports in a buzzing yet relaxed setting. Plus, the outside area is a real winner for when the weather plays ball, and being dog-friendly adds to that welcoming feel. On the downside, though, it does fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so you might end up queuing or feeling a bit squeezed in. And while most meals are delicious, a few reviews mentioned things like overly greasy bits or not-quite-perfect sides, which is a shame but doesn't spoil the overall experience. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after an authentic pub day out in Richmond – just pop in early or book ahead to make the most of it!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, with seasonal British classics that are freshly made and locally sourced – perfect for a proper pub meal.
  • The staff are friendly and welcoming, always ready with a chat and great service that makes you feel right at home.
  • It's a brilliant spot for watching live sports, with BT and Sky Sports on offer, creating a lively atmosphere without being overwhelming.
  • They've got a cosy outside space with a retractable roof, ideal for enjoying a pint in the garden no matter the British weather.
  • Being dog-friendly and just a short walk from Richmond station makes it super convenient for a quick visit or a relaxed day out.
Cons
  • It can get incredibly busy, especially on Sundays at lunchtime, so you might have to wait or plan ahead to snag a table.
  • Some dishes, like the fish and chips, might come out a bit greasy, which takes away from the overall enjoyment.
  • There could be minor inconsistencies with the food, such as the potatoes in the Sunday roast not always hitting the mark.

Came here spontaneously with my wife's spanish family. Was a perfect place to introduce them to some traditional British pub grub 👌 Really good sharing options to sample different bits. All delicious (and I'm not usually a fan of British food) 5 stars for sure

Delicious and crispy cider-battered fish and chips, coeliac / gluten free friendly. Could be a bit less greasy, but it was still very good. The curry sauce for dipping was a nice bonus. All others in our group enjoyed their meals too, and our server was chatty and friendly.

UPDATE February 16/25 Management at Old Ship contacted us and offered to make things right and today we had an amazing Sunday Roast at the Old Ship! Service provided by Callum was amazing and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience! Most places won’t have even responded but the Management did and we are very impressed! Thank you for a lovely family roast/afternoon! We will be back!! Worst pub experience we have had in 17 years of visiting the UK! Our daughter/SIL travelled from North London to have walk and roast with us yesterday and we were delighted to have a reservation at The Old Ship. When we got seated we were told…”OH no roasts left…NONE not even vegetarian”. But you can order off our mains menu. Now knowing it is 345 now on a beautiful Sunday in Richmond, we decided to stay and order off main menu. Then it came “we actually only have Fish/chips and beef burger left on our mains menu” Two of the four of us cannot eat fish so we had one choice! Meals came and apparently the fish/chips were good. We could continually see people arriving for their reservations and then getting up to leave when everyone found out no food left….. at 4pm! The waitress brought us pudding menu and then announced they only had crumble and ice cream left. We waited over 20 minutes for her to come see if we wanted pudding and she never came! What a waste of money and time. This is not a situation of them being overrun with orders…this is a situation of mismanagement of kitchen/supplies. Pub was half empty. We had been to Old Ship once before for pints/chips and loved the atmosphere . So disappointed. At least management could have done was walk around and speak to customers so your wait staff weren't the only ones taking the heat!!

Truly great place to grab a pint or sit down for dinner. Plenty of places to sit, a great beer selection (as well as wine, cocktails, and liquor), and the food was excellent. The highlight was absolutely the staff, they were truly amazing, both friendly and helpful. Come to Richmond for Ted Lasso but stay for Old Ship.

Super busy at lunch time on Sunday so either go early or plan to have a late lunch. The pub has a great warm and inviting atmosphere and if you don’t eat during their busy hours, no one rushes you to leave (except other customers). I enjoyed the half chicken Sunday roast although the potatoes were too dry and crispy. Baked trout with orzo was delicious and is recommended.
