About This Pub
Ah, the White Cross – it's one of those classic spots in Richmond that really captures the heart of a good British pub, doesn't it? Picture this: you're sat by the Thames with a pint in hand, soaking up the scenery and tucking into some hearty, home-cooked fare that's bang on the money, especially their Sunday roasts that are just the ticket for winding down the week. The atmosphere is spot on, too – it's welcoming, whether you're with mates, the family, or even your dog after a riverside stroll. And let's not forget those quirky moments, like when the tide comes in and turns the place into a bit of an adventure; it's all part of what makes it so memorable. On the flip side, though, I've heard a few tales of service that's not quite up to scratch – you might end up faffing about with an app that doesn't have everything on it, or dealing with staff who aren't as chirpy as you'd hope. Still, with its solid grub and that unbeatable location, it's worth a visit if you're in the area, just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a cracking time.

-
There's a fun, unique charm to the place, especially during high tide when things get a bit adventurous – it's all part of the experience!
Cons
-
Service can be a bit inconsistent at times, with some reports of staff being unhelpful or a tad rude, which puts a damper on things.
-
Ordering through the app isn't always smooth, as some menu items go missing, leading to confusion when you're trying to get your order in.
-
A few dishes might not hit the mark, like eggs that could do with a bit less cooking or portions that leave you wanting just a smidge more.
-
It can get quite busy, making it tricky to find a seat or get served quickly on popular days.

While the atmosphere and food are good, the service is terrible. We tried to order directly, and we were told to use the app- but several menu dishes were not available there, so a member of staff told me to order at the bar. When I tried ordering at the bar, I was looked down on by a group of girls (mainly a blonde one) who seemed to think I was interrupting their gossip time whilst trying to order. They also told me that kitchen closed at 9 and even though I’d had the issue with the app and it was a couple minutes before 9pm I was not allowed to order. The only nice staff member was a girl with brown hair and light eyes. Would not recommend going with high expectations. Ended up sharing a tiny tartare for two people.
Great place to stop for a bite and a drink after a walk in Richmond pk. Nice window seat top watch the world go by... Will visit again when in the area..
Nice setting and a very popular pub on the riverside, also very cosy inside. Sausage in the Scotch egg was nice but the egg could’ve done with being cooked for a minute less so it was more gooey. Steak tartare was a good portion and tasty but would’ve liked another slice of bread.
For £19.50 I’d have liked a bit more fish as I felt it was quite a lot of batter, but it wasn’t oily so thumbs up there. The chips and tartare sauce were very good but the mushy peas were sadly one cold congealed unseasoned lump and all 4 of us left them on the plate untouched.
Enjoyed the vibe and the staff are pleasant and attentive, but would maybe try another pub for food next time.
Right on the Thames in the heart of Richmond, this spot is a must-visit. A fantastic place to watch football, it offers a unique experience when the tide comes in—grab a pair of Wellies (available for rent) and enjoy the outdoor seating even as the water rises.
We had a great time here. Came in for beers and then the high tide during a new moon got us! Water blocked the exits and we had a choice of using the pubs wellies or having another round. Most people chose the latter and we all had a great time until the water receded. Those who had to leave were ably assisted by pub staff. Apparently this happens only once a month. (Not to worry if you had to leave the water rose very slowly.)
Great time and we look forward to returning!
