About This Pub
Ah, Old Castle Green – it's one of those pubs that just warms your heart from the moment you step in. Tucked away in the historic Old Market district, it's got this fantastic vibe that's all about bringing people together, especially if you're part of the LGBTQ+ scene or just looking for a safe, accepting spot to unwind. The drinks are spot on, with a great range of beers and cocktails that hit the mark every time, and don't even get me started on the beer garden – it's an absolute delight, whether you're soaking up the sun or enjoying a quiet evening under the lights. The events and Sunday lunches add a real buzz, making it perfect for a casual meet-up or a fun night out. On the flip side, I've heard a few tales of service not being as smooth as it could be, like staff seeming a bit off with certain folks, which is a pity because it could dent that inclusive feel. Still, with such high praise from most visitors, I'd say it's well worth a visit – just go in with an open mind and you'll likely have a cracking time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely spot on – it's a proper welcoming spot in Bristol, especially for the LGBTQ+ crowd and their allies, making it feel like a real community hub.
-
They've got a cracking selection of drinks, from beers to well-made cocktails, and the Sunday lunches with pop-up vendors are a treat.
-
The beer garden is a gem; it's cosy and perfect for chilling out on a sunny day or even under the stars, with all-weather setups to boot.
-
The staff are super friendly and dedicated, led by the licensee Mike, who knows how to put on a good event and make everyone feel at home.
-
Overall, it's got a vibrant, inclusive vibe that's ideal for making new mates or enjoying a relaxed catch-up.
Cons
-
There have been a couple of reports of inconsistent service, like feeling hesitant or rushed when trying to get a drink, which might leave a sour taste if you're not made to feel welcome right away.
-
It could do with ensuring that the inclusivity extends to everyone without exception, as one experience suggested otherwise, which is a shame for such a community-focused place.

One of the most friendly and beautiful pubs in Bristol. Great selection of drinks, great atmosphere inside and out. Keep up the great work
Loved the Sunday lunch, unique way of having it, great pop ups in the week too. Very much enjoyed some well made cocktails this afternoon, super friendly staff and pub dog!
Amazing pub, good vibes only! Great beer selection, amazing beer garden. Recently done up with all weather stretch tent and container kitchen offering Sunday roast and pop up food vendor.
My Asian friend and I walked in for a drink. We were first at the bar and the lady seemed hesitant to serve us. Owner (or the man with the portrait of himself in the front corner or the pub) immediately said they needed the table back in an hour but didn't say the same to the others around us. Seemed like a very white British family gathering. Not sure why they call themselves welcoming as we felt stared at and rude customer service. Possibly a racist gay bar? Wouldn't recommend, legged it out as quick as possible.
Mike and the team don't just run a pub, they run a safe place for all LGBTQ members and allies. Mike always knows how to put an event on and I have made so many important friends from here. I can fully be myself and I always use this place as a friends hang or date spot. Everyone is amazing. Coffee and 0% options are elite too. Great for sobers 😍
