About This Pub
Ah, Old Beams – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a breath of fresh air, you know? Picture yourself in this rebuilt country charmer, complete with historical touches and a snug oak barn warmed by log fires, or out in the garden on a sunny day. The food's a highlight; I've heard from mates who've raved about the roasts and specials, all served up with a side of that homely feel where you can relax without a care. The team behind the bar and in the kitchen are proper stars, always attentive and making sure everyone's looked after, whether it's sorting out allergies or helping with event planning. It's got that perfect balance of traditional pub charm and modern comforts, making it ideal for a casual catch-up or a special do. That said, it's not flawless – a few have shared it's solidly good but maybe not mind-blowing for every taste, and being a bit off the beaten track might not suit if you're just passing through. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a relaxed outing, and I'd say it's well worth popping in for a proper British pub experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with those historic wooden beams, cosy log fires, and a lovely garden for alfresco dining when the weather's nice.
-
The food is spot on – think delicious Sunday roasts, daily specials, and a great selection of real ales, wines, and beers that really hit the spot.
-
Service is top-notch; the staff are friendly, efficient, and go the extra mile, especially for things like dietary needs or hosting events.
-
It's super accessible and welcoming, with parking, dog-friendly policies, and wheelchair access, making it easy for everyone to enjoy a visit.
-
The function room is brilliant for gatherings, whether it's a birthday bash or a casual meet-up, and it's all set in a peaceful, hidden spot that feels like a proper retreat.
Cons
-
A couple of folks mentioned it as good rather than outstanding, so if you're after something truly exceptional, it might not blow you away every time.
-
It's tucked away in Shenley Lodge, which is lovely but could feel a bit out of the way if you're not local, potentially making it tricky for a spontaneous stop.

This is the first time we have been there, and we will definitely go again. We had three courses and it was all very good. Lisa, our waitress was so nice, friendly, and very efficient. She gave us time to enjoy our food before coming over. Very clean and good atmosphere.
Took my fiancés nan for a Sunday lunch this afternoon and was very pleasantly surprised!
Visited Old Beams today specifically for a roast dinner. My partner and I wanted to treat his nan to and roast dinner before we headed home for the weekend and to save her from the dreaded cooking/washing up mountain that usually follows. I’m really glad we popped in; food was really tasty, service was charming and atmosphere was fairly cheery.
Whilst it could be argued the prices can be a little steep on some items the quality is there and honestly the food is worth the money. I haven’t had a pub roast this lovely in a long time! Much better than a carvery and worth another visit if we’re ever back in the local area.
Big shout out to Katie, Katie’s sunny persona really made our visit special. She took great care of our table, was very attentive and did a great job at making us feel welcome :)
Stopped by The Old Beams in Shenley Lodge recently and really enjoyed the whole experience. The place has a lovely mix of character and comfort—those old wooden beams and cozy corners make it feel proper traditional, but still clean and welcoming.
I went for the fish and chips, and it was exactly what I was hoping for: golden, crispy batter, soft flaky fish inside, and chunky chips that actually tasted like potatoes (not always a given these days!). My friend had the steak and ale pie and was equally happy—proper pub grub, full of flavour and super satisfying.
The staff were great—friendly, quick to check in, but not overbearing. We didn’t have to wait long for food even though it was fairly busy, and everything felt relaxed and easygoing.
Only reason it’s not a full 5 stars is that while the food and service were excellent, the atmosphere was just a little quieter than expected—it could’ve done with a bit of background music or something to lift the vibe. Still, a really solid pub and definitely one I’d come back to. Great for an unpretentious night out with good food and a pint.
We hosted our Nan's 90th birthday party on the cosy event space provided. Food was yummy and decent price as well as welcome drinks. It was ideal really for what we needed and the food was great, team were very helpful on the day and before. We were able to put decorations up and really make it our own with flowers and balloons so our Nan had a wonderful day. Thank you very much for a special event.
We went for the Sunday roast, one of our group had a soya and fish allergy, the waitress couldn't have been more attentive and assuring. She provided lots of information about the food, a separate card with the info on which foods and sauces had which allergens and even spoke to the kitchen staff again once the order was made. The waitress allowed the kids to have a smaller version of the full Sunday roast for the kids considering the amount of food on the plate , my son had a chicken supreme with all the trimmings for a fiver and my daughter had the veggie option for less than £4! Better than fast food any day of the week. We were astonished at the value. The Sunday roasts were great - the only reason and it's quite picky I didn't go for a 5 rating is I prefer my meats a little rarer but I have to say the food was cooked perfectly and I need buckets of gravy! Although again with no faff they provided a gravy boat quick sharp. We had a lovely meal and great surroundings and they could not have done more for the kids providing colouring sheets and crayons. I would highly recommend this place it feels like the whole restaurant serving staff are on the same page and they care about the experience they provide, great job Old Beams!
