About This Pub

Ah, Northern Lights in Belfast – what a gem it is for anyone who fancies a pint and a bite without the fuss. I've got to say, diving into the reviews, it's clear folks are buzzing about the place; the beer selection is just brilliant, with all those rotational taps and Galway Bay favourites that keep things fresh and exciting. Pair that with some seriously good food – think generous portions at prices that won't sting your wallet – and you've got a winner for a casual evening or even sorting out a group bash. The staff really shine too; they're friendly, attentive sorts who go out of their way to make your visit special, whether you're there for a quick drink or something more. On the flip side, though, the kitchen does pack up a bit early on some days, which might leave you scrambling if you're out late, and it seems like the vibe can vary depending on when you go – one person noted their experiences weren't always consistent. Still, with a solid 4.5 rating overall, it's worth keeping in mind for us pub goers; just book ahead to avoid any disappointments and enjoy the buzz without the hassle.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely brilliant – they've got a fantastic range of craft beers from Galway Bay Brewery, plus loads of local and imported options that any beer enthusiast would love.
  • The food is spot on; reviewers rave about the excellent portions, reasonable prices, and tasty dishes that leave you feeling satisfied without breaking the bank.
  • The staff are so welcoming and helpful – from chatting with families to going the extra mile for events, they really make you feel at home.
  • It's got a great atmosphere, perfect for everything from casual drinks to group gatherings or even special occasions like birthdays and parties.
  • They're ace at hosting events; whether it's a Christmas market or a retro arcade night, they pull out all the stops to make things memorable.
Cons
  • Kitchen hours can be a bit limiting, especially on weekdays when it shuts early, so you might miss out on food if you're popping in late.
  • Experiences can vary a touch; one reviewer mentioned mixed visits, so it might not always hit the mark depending on the day or time.
  • It could get quite busy during peak times, which might make it tricky to snag a table without booking ahead.

We've been running our retro arcade here for a number of months and it's been a great experience. We've been welcomed with open arms and helped with every aspect of running our events, they even made a special retro food menu for us which has been a great success! Great venue, great staff and kudos to Aidan who reached out and got us there.

Dropped into Northern Lights on Saturday with my 4 year old son for the Christmas Market. We could not have had a nicer time. We were greeted by Sarah, who introduced herself and chatted away to my son about Christmas. So lovely. The Market stalls were great and I got a present for my dad there. Thom became very interested in two lovely customers playing pool, who let him have a go. Back downstairs for a soft drink (and a wine for mummy). Again, Sarah was so attentive to me and my son, despite the fact it was very busy. Having worked years in hospitality myself, I know how tough that can be! All over, it was a great experience. Can't wait to get back and bring the family. We didn't have a chance to try the food but what we saw being served looked fantastic! Sarah and the other staff member at the bar (lovely guy, didn't catch his name) are a credit to the place.

I had mixed feelings about writing this review for Northern Lights. I go regularly, but my last two visits were vastly different. This evening was excellent—great food and exceptional service from the ever-attentive Aidan. He consistently goes above and beyond to ensure we are well taken care of. He is knowledgeable, accommodating, and friendly, making the experience truly enjoyable. However, on a previous visit (a Sunday afternoon), the experience was disappointing. Aidan was not present, and instead, a red-haired staff member (whose experience in the service industry seemed questionable) was serving. Rather than being accommodating, she argued with me over the existence of a kids’ menu item I’ve ordered many times before. She was dismissive, condescending, and argumentative. Thankfully, the chef confirmed the availability of the dish, and my child’s crying ceased. Had my earlier visit been my first impression of Northern Lights, I would not have returned. Thankfully, tonight’s experience restored my faith in the establishment. I hope to avoid the “Duchess of Darkness” on future visits!

Absolutely fabulous place for food and drinks on Ormeau Road, and the prices are really reasonable too! My friends and I were going to Ormeau Park for a concert last night and wanted dinner before heading to the gig. We went to Northern Lights and got an incredible meal. The menu is fantastically curated, loads of options available. I ordered the burger and fries with cheese and bacon, and everything arrived fresh and piping hot, and tasting delicious! Another of our party ordered the chili, which came with rice and tortilla and was so warming and tasty. The chicken wings were absolutely unreal, so flavoursome and such good quality. There were 10 of us there last night and not one of us had a bad word to say about our meals! I'll definitely be making a return visit here soon!!
