About This Pub
Ah, the Phoenix Club – what used to be the old British Legion in Newton Aycliffe – it's one of those places that feels like a proper community hub, you know? I've heard from a few mates that the food is a real highlight; someone raved about their Christmas lunch, saying the Yorkshire puddings were just how they like them, all golden and well-cooked. And the entertainment side of things sounds fun – line dancing on Thursdays and gigs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays – perfect if you're after a bit of a singalong or a dance with friends. It's open every day from 11 until 11 at night, which is handy for a quick stop or a full evening out. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses; a couple of folks have mentioned they're disappointed it's distanced itself from the Legion roots, like not selling poppies these days, which takes away from that traditional charm. Then there's that story about the TV getting switched mid-match from rugby to football – I can imagine that would rile a few people up if you're settled in for the game. Overall, it's got a great rating going for it, but if you're heading there, just keep in mind it might need to iron out a few kinks to really shine. Still, for a local night out, it's worth a punt if you're in the area.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food here is absolutely spot on – think delicious Christmas lunches with perfectly cooked Yorkshire puddings that leave you wanting more.
-
It's a brilliant place to catch up with mates; the atmosphere feels warm and welcoming, especially with regular entertainment like line dancing on Thursdays and shows over the weekends.
-
With a solid 4.6 rating, it's clear folks appreciate the overall vibe, making it a reliable spot for a relaxed pint and a good time.
Cons
-
It's a shame they've cut ties with the Royal British Legion and renamed it the Phoenix Club – some people miss the traditional elements, like not selling poppies anymore.
-
There have been a few grumbles about things like the TV choices; one chap was gutted when they switched from England rugby to football, which spoiled the moment for him.
-
It seems like the place could do with putting in a bit more effort in spots, as one review put it – not quite living up to its full potential based on feedback.

Food was very good. Xmas Lunch. Loved yorkshire pudding. It was all well cooked just how I like it.
To start with it's no longer the British Legion but was renamed the Phoenix club after cutting ties with the RBL always worth a visit to see drinking buddies
This is not Legion its now Phoenix club with good entertainment Friday Saturday & Sunday Thursday night Line Dancing everyone welcome.
Shocking turned the telly over from England v Scotland Rugby to watch Swansea in fa Cup football
Now disassociated from the RBL and called the Phoenix club. As like the wording in my old school reports "MUST TRY HARDER".
They aren't even selling poppies this year.
