About This Pub

Ah, Merrie England in Blackpool – it's one of those places that really captures the spirit of a traditional British boozer, isn't it? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this fantastic live music scene, like the accordion player Calum who gets everyone singing along, which is just brilliant if you're in the mood for a bit of a knees-up. The staff come across as genuinely warm and welcoming, making it easy to settle in and enjoy a chat without the usual racket. And let's not forget the comedy acts; Joey Blower sounds like a right laugh, keeping things lively with his quick wit, though I have to say, it's not for the faint-hearted with that crude edge to it. On the flip side, there have been a few gripes about drinks not being up to scratch, like outdated bottles, which is a shame because it can spoil an otherwise good time. The place has a bit of a rough-and-tumble feel too, with some reviews mentioning it's full of colourful folks, so if you're after something polished, it might not hit the mark. All in all, it's a solid choice for a fun, affordable day out by the Promenade, especially if you're up for some no-nonsense entertainment and don't mind the occasional hiccup – I'd pop in if you're in Blackpool and fancy a proper laugh with mates.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The live music, especially the accordion sessions, is an absolute treat and creates a lively, sing-along atmosphere that's perfect for a fun afternoon out.
  • Friendly staff who make you feel right at home, adding to that welcoming vibe we all love in a good pub.
  • The entertainment, like Joey Blower's comedy, brings plenty of laughs and keeps things entertaining – it's a great spot for some cheeky British humour.
  • It's moderately priced, so you can enjoy a few drinks and a show without breaking the bank.
  • A great place to meet new people and have a chat, with the music level just right so you don't have to shout over it.
Cons
  • Some drinks might be past their best, like out-of-date beers, which can put a dampener on things if you're after a fresh pint.
  • The humour can get a bit crude at times, so it might not suit everyone – think Roy Chubby Brown style, which is fun if you're up for it, but could be off-putting otherwise.
  • The overall vibe is quite rough and ready, with some colourful characters around, so it might feel a tad overwhelming if you're looking for something more relaxed.
  • Reviews suggest it's hit or miss with the quality, as not every visit is flawless, which keeps it from being a guaranteed winner.

We visited here with My husband, my sister and my brother in law, it was an afternoon, we had a few drinks and enjoyed the accordion music, we come from Scotland, so the Accordian music suits us, we sang along with the music courtesy of Calum. So enjoyable, as we could sing then talk to each other without having to shout! We will be back!!

nice refurb during the winter and callum keyboard player back which worth visiting for. staff very polite and friendly. But i drink bottled heineken and have been in twice in afternoons this week and on both visits these drinks were out of date the 1st one dated end march 2020 and on my 2nd visit drink dated end of february 2020 one mistake i can understand but twice, when paying over £3 a bottle is not on, dread to think how old the draught beer lager is. i dont blame staff its prob higher managment who are making them do this.

Great afternoon for my birthday! The show had already started but that wasn't a problem. Joey Blower is extremely funny and keeps everyone on their toes ( don't use your mobile phone as he'll have it off you and read all your messages out loud 😂 Fun afternoon

Rough and ready party venue with a whole host of colourful characters. Adult comedy from resort favourite Joey Blower is hilarious, but not for the faint hearted! Whatever you do, don't sit or stand near the stage. And don't wear white socks!!!
