About This Pub

Ah, Ma Egerton's Stage Door – what a gem of a pub in the heart of Liverpool! From the moment you walk in, you're enveloped in its rich history, dating back to 1846, with stories of legendary performers that really bring the place to life; it's like chatting about old times with a mate over a cold lager. The food stands out as a highlight – those rustic pizzas and the classic Scouse stew are spot-on, offering great value and a taste of local tradition that keeps you coming back. The staff are genuinely friendly, creating that easy-going atmosphere where conversations flow naturally, and events like the Thursday ukulele nights add a fun, unexpected twist to your evening. On the flip side, though, the landlord's playful banter might not be everyone's cup of tea, and if you're planning to pop in for a quick one, you could find it bustling or need to sort out a booking for deals, which is a bit of a faff. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting a blend of history, good grub, and a relaxed vibe, but it's worth keeping those little quirks in mind for the best experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The historic atmosphere is absolutely brilliant – it's like stepping back in time with all those tales of famous performers like Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland, making every visit feel special.
  • The food's a real winner; their pizzas and Scouse stew are homemade and delicious, perfect for a hearty meal without breaking the bank.
  • Service is warm and welcoming, with staff who make you feel right at home, and it's a great spot for a good chat over a pint.
  • It's affordably priced, so you can enjoy fine ales and spirits without worrying about the cost, and they've got fun events like ukulele nights to liven things up.
  • The pub strikes a nice balance – lively but not overwhelming, ideal for a relaxed afternoon that might turn into an all-day affair.
Cons
  • The landlord's cheeky sense of humour can come across as a bit too bold for some, like when one person mentioned getting offered a playful threat before even ordering a drink.
  • Booking might be needed in advance for certain deals or during busy times, which could put a damper on spontaneous visits.
  • As a small back-street spot, it can get quite cosy, meaning it might feel a tad crowded on popular days, especially if you're after a quiet corner.

Went in here Good Friday with the intention of having couple and moving on- stayed in here all afternoon! Really comfy and nice good old fashioned pub - able to have a conversation and enjoy good lager - we had a pizza which was really nice !

Nice find by the station great food and assuredly the best tea in the UK! Thank you for your service. Full of fascinating memorabilia from past legend's who played the empire and future legends yet to tread the boards. Must be a good bar, we saw the staff drinking there as well, probably the best recommendation ever. BTW would have got 6 stars if hot chocolate was on the la a carte menu Happy Easter

Nice little back street pub, the landlord's a bit of a joker and offered to spark me out before I'd even bought a pint! Didn't try the food but the place was lively without being rowdy. Nice place and I'd drop by again.

As a first-time visitor to Liverpool, I couldn't miss the chance to try the city’s beloved classic - a traditional Scouse (stew). A friend highly recommended this place, calling it the best spot for an authentic bowl, and he wasn’t wrong! The moment I walked in, I noticed nearly every table had a bowl of Scouse, which only confirmed I was in the right place. Service was lightning-fast, the atmosphere warm and inviting, and the staff incredibly kind. But the real star? The dish itself - rich, flavorful, and undeniably fresh, with melt-in-your-mouth beef that made every bite a delight. A must-try for anyone visiting Liverpool. I’ll definitely be back for another bowl!
