About This Pub

Ah, Low Lights Tavern – it's one of those places that just hits the spot every time. I've heard from folks who've popped in that the pies are an absolute treat; think tender fillings and that perfect flaky pastry that leaves you scraping the plate. The staff really go the extra mile, being so attentive and chatty, which makes the whole experience feel personal and enjoyable. Pair that with the charming dining area, complete with a lovely log fire that adds to the homely vibe, and you've got yourself a winner for a laid-back afternoon or evening out. On the flip side, it does tend to fill up quickly, so planning ahead is a good idea if you don't fancy queuing. Overall, it's a solid choice for anyone looking for good grub and good craic in North Shields – I'd say give it a go if you're in the area, but maybe aim for a quieter time to fully soak it all in.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on, especially those legendary pies like the corned beef or steak and mature cheddar – they're hearty, flavoursome, and just what you fancy on a chilly day.
  • The staff are so welcoming and friendly; they'll make you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, and they're always eager to chat about the local beers on tap.
  • It's got a lovely, cosy atmosphere with beautiful decorations and a roaring log fire, making it the perfect spot for a relaxed catch-up with mates.
  • They've got a great selection of locally brewed beers that are superb, and the team is enthusiastic about recommending them to enhance your visit.
Cons
  • It can get pretty busy, especially around lunchtime, so you might need to arrive early to snag a table and avoid waiting around.
  • While everything seems top-notch based on recent feedback, the pub's online presence isn't fully sorted, which might make it a bit trickier to check details in advance.

Myself and my husband ate here today after hearing so many great things about the famous pies and have to say we were not disappointed. I had the corned beef pie and my husband had the steak and mature cheddar 😋 Both were amazing. I couldn't eat all of mine my husband would normally help out with that but even he was to full to finish mine 🤣 The service was friendly and efficient and the atmosphere great. We ate nearly 8hrs ago and are both still full. Highly recommended. Thank you. We will definitely be back again

Been here on several occasions. Had the corned beef pie with mash and gravy this time. As good as it gets in my opinion. I would recommend getting there earlier than 12:00 so you can get a table. Order a drink and the staff will take your food choices when they start serving lunch. Lovely real fires with some local beers. Excellent place for lunch.

The pub on entry was bar to the right, more of a dining area to the left. We were greeted by a lovely lady who gave us a menu and took our drinks order, after a little while a gentlemen took our food order. The dining room is very well decorated and has a beautiful log fire. It wasn't long before the food came, and it did not disappoint ... the pie was beautifully cooked inside and out the mash was not my cup of tea but my partner liked it my mushy peas were what i can only describe as a childhood moment they were amazing and tasted how peas should unlike the watered down ones sold everywhere else. My gravy was lovely and thick. My partners cod was cooked so well it melted in your mouth. The chips are definitely the better option and are cooked so well!!! It's definitely worth the money. 100% recommended for anyone passing or local.

I recently visited The Low Lights Tavern in North Shields, and it was an unforgettable experience that more than earns its five-star rating. Here's what stood out to me: Service: The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive, and welcoming. From the moment I walked in, I felt right at home. They knew their regulars by name and still managed to make newcomers like me feel just as valued. My drink orders were quick, and they checked in just enough without being overbearing. Ambience: This place has charm in spades. With its cozy, old-world feel, you can sense the history of the building as soon as you step inside. It's the perfect spot to relax after a day out or for a casual evening with friends. The warm lighting and inviting decor create an atmosphere that makes you want to stay for hours—and I almost did! Drink Choices: The bar offers an impressive selection of ales, beers, and spirits, with a clear emphasis on quality. They have an excellent rotation of local ales, which is a huge plus for anyone wanting to sample the best of the region. The staff were happy to recommend drinks based on my preferences, and every pint I had was top-notch. Food: While I didn’t order any food during my visit, I couldn’t help but notice the dishes being served to other patrons. From hearty pub classics to more modern dishes, everything looked absolutely incredible—generous portions, beautifully plated, and smelling divine. Next time, I'll be diving into the menu without hesitation. Live Entertainment: The live entertainment was the cherry on top of an already stellar evening. The performers were talented, engaging, and clearly enjoyed what they were doing, which made for an electric atmosphere. It’s rare to find a venue where the music perfectly complements the vibe, but The Low Lights Tavern nailed it. All in all, The Low Lights Tavern is a gem of a pub, blending history, hospitality, and fantastic entertainment. Whether you're a local or just passing through, it’s worth stopping by—if not for the drinks and atmosphere, then for the entertainment and the promise of amazing food. I'll definitely be back!

Was in North Shields to catch a ferry, so popped in here to pass some time. Fantastic pub, staff are lovely and welcoming, also very enthusiastic when you ask them questions about the locally brewed beers on tap, which are also superb. My wife ordered a coffee which she enjoyed. One of the beer taps is an actual BRIT Award which was won by their local lad, Sam Fender. I'd imagine that's quite a pull for tourists. Sadly we weren't hungry at the time of our visit, so didn't get to try the food, but throughout the afternoon they had to start operating a waiting list for dining, so it must be good.
