About This Pub

Ah, the Lion in Boreham – it's one of those places that just hits the spot for a proper pub experience with a touch of class. From what I've gathered from folks who've been there, the food is a real standout; think hearty fish pies loaded with fresh veg and sea bass that's spot on, or those indulgent four-course meals that make you forget about the world outside. The service is another winner – staff are genuinely attentive and go the extra mile, like waiting past their shift to greet you or ensuring everything runs smoothly for big family days. It's also brilliant for events, with plenty of space for weddings or meetings, giving off that relaxed, rural feel even though it's not far from the hustle of Chelmsford. On the flip side, it does come at a moderate price, so it might feel a tad steep for a quick bite, and those opening hours can vary a bit, which means double-checking if you're aiming for a late one. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after a place that delivers on comfort and quality, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone looking to unwind with good company and even better grub.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely brilliant – from the fish pie packed with fresh ingredients to the four-course meals that leave you wanting more, it's consistently top-notch and highly recommended.
  • Service is warm and attentive; waitstaff like Steph go out of their way to make you feel welcome, whether it's for a family lunch or a special event.
  • It's a great spot for occasions, with spacious facilities perfect for weddings, conferences, or just a relaxing getaway, offering that rural charm while being close to Chelmsford.
  • The atmosphere is spot-on for unwinding; guests often feel totally relaxed and comfortable, with delightful staff making every visit memorable.
Cons
  • It can be a bit dearer than your average pub meal, as one diner noted with the four-course option, which might not suit everyday outings but feels worth it for a treat.
  • While it's open seven days a week, the varying closing times could catch you out if you're planning a late evening, so it's best to check ahead.

We had lunch on a Sunday and everything was perfect. The fish pie was amazing, lots of fish, lots of fresh veg. Sea bass was lovely too. Highly recommend. We have eaten here on numerous occasions and it's constantly good

On the spur of the moment last week the five of us decided to visit this restaurant. We all had the four course meal which was delicious. The waiter was very attentive and looked after us throughout the meal. The cost per person was forty pound including one drink. Dearer that normal but overall worth it. The only downside was it was noisy.

As a guest at a family wedding, I found the Lion to be an ideal venue. The setting is rural, despite its proximity to Chelmsford and the accommodation is extensive, belying the appearance from the road. The facilities are spacious and well-appointed and there is good car parking. Guest rooms were very comfortable and the food excellent. Above all, I was most impressed by the professionalism of the staff who are friendly, well-organised, informative and helpful, without being over-attentive. I was highly impressed with the Lion and would recommend it unreservedly.

You know a hotel is good when you feel totally relaxed, away from the day to day, comfortable and struggling to find a fault! Every member of the team I met were delightful, particularly Sam and the lovely lady who booked me in. I was slightly delayed and she waited at the end of her shift to greet me. Sam looked after both mornings I was there and went out of her way to make my breakfast beyond perfect. Lovely room (slightly strong room freshener is the ONLY thing I wasn’t so keen on but it was nice), DELICIOUS breakfast, and stunning garden. I wholeheartedly recommend the home made chocolate granola on the berry sundae. I highly recommend this hotel for amazing value for money and a relaxed, comfortable escape.
