About This Pub

Ah, Johnny's Bar – what a lovely little find in Watford! From the moment you step in, you're greeted by the warmest staff who've got this knack for making everyone feel right at home, whether you're there for a quick coffee or to soak up the atmosphere with some cracking live music. It's got that perfect blend of laid-back daytime vibes and a more energetic evening scene, with events that really get the energy flowing, and it's ace for gathering friends or even sorting out a private bash in their funky basement setup. The drinks selection is spot on too, offering everything from tasty cocktails to a good pint, and those music elements like the record area add a real touch of character that you don't see everywhere. On the flip side, though, it does tend to fill up quickly on busier nights, so you might end up jostling for space or waiting a bit longer than you'd like. And while it's still finding its feet, it might not have the full range of options some bigger places do, plus those opening hours can be a tad unclear, so planning ahead is key. All in all, it's a cracking spot that brings a bit of heart back to the local scene, and I'd definitely recommend giving it a go for a proper good time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always ready with a smile and helpful advice to make your visit memorable
  • It has a fantastic atmosphere with live music events that really bring the place to life and create a lively vibe
  • A great selection of drinks, including cocktails, coffee, and even Cruzcampo on draught, catering to all tastes
  • It's a brilliant spot for private parties or community events, with a dedicated basement area complete with its own bar and dance floor
  • The unique music room and record sales add a fun, cultural twist that sets it apart from the usual bars
Cons
  • It can get quite crowded on weekends, which might make it tricky to find a seat or enjoy a quiet chat
  • With it still being a relatively new spot, there aren't as many options or experiences built up yet, so it might feel a bit under the radar
  • There's a slight confusion with the opening times listed online versus elsewhere, so it's worth double-checking to avoid any surprises

An interesting bar that also sells records and has a music room downstairs too. The bar has a reasonable selection of drinks, makes cocktails and sells coffee as well. Service is quick and there is plenty of seating but it does get very busy at the weekend. The record area is in a separate area and has been busy every time I have visited but can't comment on the stock. The music room downstairs has it's own bar but there is no stage, the lighting could be better and the sound is ok. The main issue is it's a bit on the small side and having no stage seeing the artists can be an issue.

A good addition to the local pub scene. As Watford becomes more generic and bland (thanks Watford council!), it's good to have a new independent pub that's positioning itself as a cultural hub. You'll find plenty of live music here, as well as other artistic and community events. Like most of the pubs just out of the town centre, it's friendly and welcoming to all.
