About This Pub
Ah, Church Street Tavern – it's one of those places that just feels like a proper local gem in Colchester, doesn't it? I have to say, the staff really stand out; they're so welcoming and attentive, making every visit feel like catching up with old mates. The food is where it shines brightest – those burgers and steaks are absolute winners, and if you're in the mood for something special, the lamb chops are divine. Upstairs, it's all about that relaxed, sunlit vibe for a nice sit-down, while downstairs offers a more laid-back bar scene for a quick bite or a craft beer. It's ideally placed in the town centre, which is brilliant for meeting up after a day out. But, to be fair, it's not all perfect – I've heard a few grumbles about the Sunday roast portions being a tad skimpy, with things like tiny slices of beef and missing parsnips, which could leave you a bit disappointed if that's what you're after. Still, with so many rave reviews for the overall experience, I'd say it's well worth a try for a solid night out, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and maybe save room for an extra snack!

The food is a real highlight – think delicious burgers, juicy steaks, and those spicy lamb chops that hit the spot every time.
-
It's got such a welcoming atmosphere, with a relaxed upstairs restaurant that's perfect for a quiet meal and a cosy downstairs bar for casual vibes.
-
Being right in the heart of Colchester makes it super convenient for popping in after a wander around town.
Cons
-
Portion sizes can be a bit on the small side, especially with the Sunday roast, which might leave you wanting more bang for your buck.
-
Some dishes don't always live up to expectations, like missing sides or items that aren't quite cooked to perfection, as one person noted with their roast potatoes.

Disappointed with the Sunday roast , since my last visit the portion has got smaller, tiny slices of beef no parsnips. Smaller portions of roast potatoes which was just as well because they were nowhere near roasted.
Server was as very pleasant and helpful couldn’t complain about her . The bill came to £273 for 4 .lets face it it is public grub. Wasn’t happy with the service charge of over £30 . I don’t like to be told how much to tip .
Two weeks ago we went to another pub I mention no names. Sunday roast and a drink £11. And I can’t say I didn’t enjoy it just as much . Won’t be getting ripped off again at Church tavern.
First time visiting the Tavern, and it was great. Friendly staff and brilliant food - the burger was delicious!
One of the best restaurants in Colchester! We went for lunch and sat upstairs on the first floor — it was quiet and felt really relaxed. The service was amazing, very attentive and friendly. We shared the T-bone steak for two, and it was absolutely delicious. Great food, great service — highly recommend and we’ll definitely be back!
Excellent experience as always. Service was top notch, and the spicy lamb chops were divine.
Went for a Sunday roast. Restaurant is in a very nice location, central to Colchester. The premise of the restaurant is set over two floors, bar below and restaurant upstairs.
I was impressed with the quality of the roast dinner (roast beef). The roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding were cooked as you would hope. The cauliflower cheese was excellent. Everything on the plate worked very very well.
Sitting upstairs depending on where they seat you can feel slightly claustrophobic, but it's just the nature of the space that you're dealing with I guess.
Overall, very, very good. I would definitely reccomend it for a Sunday Roast and I'm sure that the rest of their menu is just as good.
