About This Pub

Ah, the Horse & Jockey – what a lovely little find in Chorlton! I've got to say, it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, with its historic building and that inviting front terrace for soaking up the sun. The beers are a highlight for me; they're crystal clear and full of flavour, especially the Joseph Holt bitter, which pairs so well with the hearty food on offer. Whether you're tucking into a steak sandwich or trying out the vegan options, everything's cooked to a tee with generous portions that leave you satisfied. The staff are always cheerful and efficient, making sure your glass doesn't stay empty for long, and it's great to see it's so accommodating for families and dogs alike, with events like craft fairs adding to the buzz. On the flip side, it does get packed on busier days, so you might end up queuing a bit, and if you're hoping for a late-night spot, it closes up relatively early. All in all, though, it's a solid choice for a good night out – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go if you're in the area.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beers are absolutely spot on, with a fantastic selection of cask ales and craft options from Joseph Holt – perfect for a refreshing pint on a warm evening.
  • The food menu is a real winner, offering delicious dishes with great portion sizes, plenty of choices for vegetarians and vegans, and even some unique pairings with their locally brewed beers.
  • It's got such a warm, cosy atmosphere in that historic 500-year-old building, making it ideal for a relaxed catch-up with friends or a family outing.
  • The service is top-notch and friendly, with quick bar staff and attentive teams that make you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick drink or a full meal.
  • Outdoor seating on the flower-filled terrace is brilliant for sunny days, and it's wonderfully dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry mate along for the fun.
Cons
  • It can get quite busy, especially on weekends or during events, which might mean a bit of a wait for a table or at the bar if you're not there early.
  • The opening hours wrap up at 23:00 most days, so it's not the best spot if you're after a late-night session – more suited to an evening wind-down.
  • While it's got a traditional charm, it might not appeal to everyone if you're in the mood for something more modern or trendy, as it's very much a classic pub vibe.

Spotted this pub whilst on a brief walk around Chorlton and thought I would give it a try. Wasn't disappointed. The perfect pub for sitting outside on long warm nights. The cask ale is first class, crystal clear pint of Joseph Holt's bitter. So good I had to try 3. If you're in the area, this pub is at the bottom of Whitelow Road. About 10 mins from the tram stop. Not to be looked over!

Our favourite spot for a drink after a walk on the river, a great Holt pub. Service is always exceptional with barely any wait at the bar - good beer and guest beer choices, nice wines. We had roast dinners today and they were beautifully cooked, great portion sizes and extra gravy given with no bother! We come most Sundays for a drink and will definitely come for dinner again!

We had our post wedding meal here on 16th April 2025 for our large wedding party. Sophie and her team were exceptional. They provided an excellent service. food was delicious and no delays despite serving 38 of us. Would highly recommend.

Despite its size this pub has a cosy atmosphere and good food with friendly staff and reasonable prices. Ciabatta steak sandwich is highly recommended. If you choose the signature salad definitely add the extra halloumi or chicken to make it a satisfying dish. More of a large side salad otherwise. Salt and pepper chips are fab.

The horse and jockey is a beautiful tudor looking pub from the outside set in front of Chorlton Green at the end of Beech Rd. It is spacious inside and yet cosy and warm. Great for small groups to drink or dine. Nice tasty selection of food with good portion sizes. Two in our group are vegan and there were a good number of vegan selections - both mains and desserts. Combination of draft and bottled beer - alcoholic and non-alcholic - to choose from. Staff relaxed, friendly and knowledgeable about their foodo options. A definite recommend if you are visiting Chorlton-cum-Hardy.
