About This Pub
Ah, the Horse and Jockey – it's one of those classic pubs in Aylesbury that you hear about from friends, and honestly, it lives up to the hype in so many ways. From what I've gathered from the buzz around, the food is a real highlight; think hearty, well-prepared pub grub that's spot-on for a mid-week dinner or a family Sunday roast, with plenty of choices to suit everyone, including the little ones. The staff are absolute gems, always up for a chat and making sure you feel right at home, which really adds to that cosy, community feel. And let's not forget the beer garden – it's a lovely spot to soak up some fresh air with a pint in hand. On the other hand, it's not all smooth sailing; I've heard a few tales of waits dragging on longer than expected, even on quieter evenings, and there have been times when the food hasn't quite hit the mark, like with some dodgy sausages or undercooked bits that left a bad taste. The bar itself could use a bit more of that inviting pub warmth, as it sometimes feels more like you're just passing through. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back evening out, but I'd say go in with an open mind – it's got the charm to win you over, as long as you're prepared for the occasional off day.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is generally delicious and well-cooked, with great options for families, including kids' menus and vegetarian choices, making it a top pick for a relaxed meal.
-
Staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for catching up with mates or hosting a gathering.
-
It's got a spacious beer garden that's ideal for enjoying a drink outdoors, especially on nicer days.
-
Good value for money, with fixed-price menus and plenty of tasty dishes that leave you feeling satisfied without breaking the bank.
-
The pub's handy location near Aylesbury's attractions and easy access from the train station makes it a convenient spot for a post-explore pit stop.
Cons
-
There can be long waits for food even when it's not too busy, which might put a dampener on your plans for a quick bite.
-
Food quality isn't always consistent, with some reports of undercooked or burnt dishes that could spoil the experience.
-
The bar area feels a bit like a walkway to the restaurant, lacking that cosy pub charm you'd hope for.
-
Low ceilings might be a hassle for taller folks, so it's worth keeping an eye out to avoid any bumps on the head.

Thank you Horse and Jockey for providing a private area with buffet food/ hot drinks for family and friends gathering for my dear old Dad's wake last Friday afternoon, 6th of June.
The staff were all lovely, friendly atmosphere, the food was delicious and plentiful, access to the garden. I really couldn't fault it. I would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking for a venue for a gathering.
Thank you so much Horse and Jockey, you completed our day celebrating my Dad's life perfectly! x
Had a lovely meal, food was tasty and good value. Service was also great, very attentive without being over the top with it!! Will be back
A nice local pub and restaurant for us.
The bar area could feel more welcoming. Feels a little like a walk through to the restaurant.
Plus, the ceilings are very low. Be careful if you are visiting.
Our food was very hot and very tasty.
We stayed at the premier inn and ate at the horse and jockey.
ALL the meals were well cooked, very well presented and served with a smile!
Breakfast this morning was one of the best I’ve had for a long while!
Ashley, Lorraine and all the team are a real credit to the place.
RECOMMENDED
There was a very long wait for the food, considering there wasn’t even many people in the pub. The food was also horrendous with my 86 year old nan getting burnt sausages the first time and when they bought her another dish they were very undercooked. My brother spent ages waiting for a pot of gravy as well, my bacon was also burnt. My dad’s steak was also meant to be medium rare and came barely pink.
