About This Pub

Ah, Hopwood House – it's one of those pubs that really captures the essence of a traditional spot with a modern twist, tucked away on the outskirts of Birmingham by the canal. I have to say, it's got that warm, inviting feel where you can pop in for a quick pint of their excellent real-ale or settle in for a proper meal. The food menu is packed with classics like fish and chips or a hearty roast, and from what I've heard from mates who've been, it's often spot-on with a bit of extra flair that makes it stand out. Plus, the beer garden is an absolute gem on a sunny day, with those leafy views making it perfect for catching up with friends or family – and it's great that they welcome dogs too, so no need to leave the pooch at home. On the flip side, though, some folks have mentioned that the prices are creeping up a bit, and a few reviews suggest the food isn't always as reliable as it could be, with complaints about things like bland sauces or dishes that don't quite deliver. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.3, it's clear most people have a good time, and I'd reckon it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just keep expectations balanced and maybe go for one of their deals to make it even better.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is generally fabulous, with tasty pub classics and some delightful surprises like homemade kebabs and a proper Sunday roast – it's all done with a bit of flair that makes meals feel special.
  • It's a welcoming, family-friendly spot with a chilled vibe, perfect for a relaxed evening, and they even welcome dogs, so you can bring your furry friends along.
  • The location is spot on, right by the canal with leafy views – grab a seat in the beer garden or the light, spacious conservatory for a lovely alfresco experience.
  • Service is often top-notch, with friendly and efficient staff who make you feel right at home, and they've got great offers like 30% off mains to sweeten the deal.
  • As a real-ale pub, they've got a cracking selection of house and guest cask beers, plus other drinks, making it ideal for a casual pint or a full meal.
Cons
  • Prices can feel a tad high for what you get, especially when some dishes don't quite live up to expectations, like watery gravy or burgers that lack toppings and sauce.
  • Food quality seems to have dipped in recent times according to a few folks, with comments about it not being as good as it used to be, which is a shame for a place with such potential.
  • While the menu has plenty of choice, it might not always hit the mark for everyone – one person found their fish and chips just 'so so', so it could be hit or miss depending on what you order.

Initially the service was great. There were very few customers, we were seated at a lovely window table as requested. The waiter was very efficient, friendly and helpful. The menu had lots of choice, and was different to other pubs that we’ve visited. The food was wonderful and we really enjoyed the main course and dessert. The only negative was that we had a long wait after finishing our main course until the waiter came to take our plates and ask about desserts. However, the pub had filled up quite considerably by then and our waiter was very stretched. Nonetheless , he remained professional and helpful. So although the wait was too long, we understood why it was.

Food has fallen in standard, quite substantially since a few years ago. To make this situation worse, the price has increased. Sweetpotato fries were nice, burgers were basic, lacking in toppings and sauce, the veggie burger tasted good but again lacking sauce. Gravy was watery, seabass lacked taste but the prawns were nice. Spent £100.00 and I will never see that money again! Setting is nice, and interior looks good. Park is dated and a little dangerous.
