About This Pub

Ah, Hop Poles – it's one of those pubs that just hits the spot when you're after a laid-back evening out. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really shines; think juicy burgers that folks rave about, and they've got some solid vegan choices too, which is brilliant if you're catering for a mixed group. The beers are always cold and there's a good variety on tap, making it easy to settle in for the night. It's especially ace for sports fans, with plenty of screens showing everything from football to rugby, and the vibe gets nicely lively without being overwhelming, particularly after work hours. That said, it's not all perfect – a few have mentioned that some dishes, like the mac and cheese or pizza, can be underwhelming if they're not quite up to scratch that day, so maybe it's worth sticking to the crowd-pleasers. Overall, I'd say it's a solid choice for a catch-up with mates; the location's spot on near the station, and with friendly service to boot, you'll likely have a good time. Just keep in mind those occasional slip-ups with the food to manage your expectations, and you'll walk away chuffed.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is spot on, with cracking burgers and tasty vegan options that keep everyone happy.
  • They've got a great selection of cold beers and cocktails, perfect for unwinding after a long day.
  • It's a relaxed and friendly spot, especially if you're into watching live sports on their many screens.
  • Service is usually prompt and the staff are welcoming, making you feel right at home.
  • Lively atmosphere, particularly after work, and it's conveniently located near Hammersmith Station for an easy meet-up.
Cons
  • Some dishes can be a bit hit or miss, like the Beef Mac and Cheese that didn't quite live up to expectations in one go.
  • Certain items, such as the pizza, might fall short on toppings, leaving you wanting a tad more.

Spicy bad lad burger is ace, my wife loved the vegan melt burger with smoked tofu and real cheese. Nice relaxed vibe, prompt service. Beer is cold. Nice joint.

We stopped by here before heading to Riverside Studios and ordered the Pepperoni Detroit pizza and the Beef Mac and Cheese. The pizza was actually pretty good— slightly lacking in Pepperoni but the addition of a few jalapenos was a nice touch. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was a letdown. The Mac and Cheese was bland and uninspired, with barely any beef and an odd hint of sweetness that didn’t work at all. It lacked seasoning and depth, making it forgettable at best. Things went further downhill with the Cookie Dough dessert. It looked like it had melted in the sun and then been reheated in a microwave—stale in texture and lacking any real flavour. The chocolate sauce was overly bitter, and the ice cream was clearly refrozen, with an icy, grainy texture instead of anything creamy or smooth. Service didn’t help the experience either— we were not shown to our reserved table, just told “it’s upstairs and set up”, there wasn’t a single smile in sight, and interaction was minimal and unwelcoming. In the end, the only thing we managed to finish was the pizza we shared. Everything else was either disappointing or completely inedible. Not sure how this place has positive food reviews—based on our experience, it’s hard to give more than 1 star for food or service.

The definitive English pub experience, the beer was great, the food really tasty. Fair prices. The hamburger was my favorite and as a person who really enjoys fries, the place has really good fries.
