About This Pub
Oh, let me tell you about Hillend Tavern – it's one of those classic village pubs that just hits the spot for a laid-back evening. I love how they've kept that traditional feel with cosy coal fires and a beer garden that's perfect for sunnier days, making it a real gem in the community. The real ales are spot on, and you're not paying through the nose for them, which is always a plus when you're catching up with mates. The staff and the regulars are so welcoming; it's like walking into a friendly gathering where everyone makes you feel part of the gang. And if you're out with your dog, it's a welcoming spot too. But, to be fair, it's not without its quirks – the place is quite snug, so if you're in a larger group, you might find it a bit tight for space. Plus, if you're after a bite to eat or have little ones in tow, it might not quite fit the bill, as food isn't on offer and it's geared more towards older kids. All in all, though, it's a solid choice for anyone wanting that authentic pub experience without any fuss – I'd say give it a go if you're nearby, but keep those points in mind for the best visit.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely spot on – it's got that cosy, welcoming vibe with open fires and a lovely beer garden that makes you feel right at home.
-
They've got a cracking selection of real ales, and the prices are really reasonable, so you can enjoy a pint without breaking the bank.
-
The staff and locals are super friendly and welcoming, which gives the place a real community feel – perfect for a chat and a relaxed evening.
-
It's dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out for a walk and fancy popping in for a drink.
-
Everything's kept clean and tidy, adding to that homely charm that regulars rave about.
Cons
-
It's a bit on the small side, so on busier nights, it might feel a tad cramped if you're after more space to spread out.
-
They don't seem to serve food, or at least it's not clear from what I've heard, which could be a downside if you're looking for a meal with your drinks.
-
Not ideal for families with very young ones, as it's only for kids over five and there's no baby changing facilities, so it might not suit everyone.
-
The pub doesn't open until the afternoon, which means it's not great if you're hoping for a morning tipple or a quick lunch stop.

Absolutely lovely pub with a beer garden, very friendly and clean and nice atmosphere, reasonable prices too.
Best pub for miles around. Great beer, open fires and very welcoming.
so friendly for people passing through. great beers, friendly staff and good punters. great pub.
Just stopped by for a pint as it had been recommended to us.
We found a good range of real ales and frienldy locals. Its quite a small cosy snug sort of place like pubs used to be.
Dog friendly. Plenty of street parking right outside.
We did not eat. I'm not sure if they serve food or not.
Beautiful well-run, traditional pub with polished wood interior. The drinks are reasonably priced and the service is great. The locals are super friendly and welcoming. We really appreciated the spacious TV room at the back of the establishment so that big screens did not interfere with the old time charm of the bar. The outside garden is absolutely delightful with flower pots and blooms adding cheerful ambiance. The only critique is that the view from the back is spectacular yet it is completely obscured by a wooden fence...what a shame. The fence could have been wrought iron, glass or horizontal tensioned wires to preserves this appealing Constablesque vista. The large posters in front and back were just a little obnoxious and detracted from the atmosphere of an otherwise outstanding local pub. Love the fact that the establishment welcomes dogs as well as humans.
