About This Pub

Ah, HellCat Maggies – it's one of those places in Belfast that you hear about and think, 'Right, that sounds like a proper good night out.' From what I've gathered chatting about it, the food really steals the show; those Irish American inspired bites, like the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, are spot on with big portions that hit the spot after a long day. The staff can be lovely and welcoming, making you feel right at home with their friendly chats, and the live music adds this brilliant buzz that gets everyone in the mood for some craic. It's in a prime spot in the city centre too, so it's dead handy for meeting up with mates. On the flip side, though, service isn't always as smooth as you'd hope – you might find yourself waiting a bit for drinks or not getting checked on after your meal arrives, which can be a bit frustrating if you're trying to keep the evening flowing. Overall, it's a solid choice for a fun evening with great grub and drinks at a fair price, but it'd be even better if they ironed out those little niggles to make every visit feel seamless.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think tasty Irish American inspired dishes like those brilliant chicken wings and the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, with generous portions that leave you satisfied.
  • Friendly staff who make you feel welcome, especially when you're settling in for a pint or a cocktail; they're quick with drinks orders and add to the great craic.
  • Fantastic atmosphere with live music that really brings the place to life, making it a top choice for a night out in Belfast city centre.
  • Good value for money on drinks and meals, perfect if you're looking for a premium spot without breaking the bank.
  • Prime location right in the heart of Belfast, easy to pop into after a wander around town.
Cons
  • Service can be inconsistent, like when drinks take ages to arrive or you're left waiting for something as simple as a glass of water, which puts a bit of a dampener on things.
  • Food and drinks might take longer than expected, especially if you're in a rush, as some folks have mentioned long waits that cut into their evening plans.
  • Not always the best follow-up from staff once your food is served; you might end up having to flag someone down if you want another round or dessert.
  • A few mixed experiences with reservations, where tables are ready but the overall flow doesn't quite hit the mark.
  • The vibe is lively, but if you're after a more relaxed pace, the occasional slip-ups could make it feel a tad chaotic.

Had a reservation for food on a Saturday evening for 9 people. Table was ready on arrival. Drinks order taken quickly, asked for water for the table, still waiting even though asked a 2nd time. Range of starters and mains ordered. The only starter that was half adequate were the chicken wings. Prawns were awful, tiny frozen shrimp and served look warm swimming in butter with pre sliced chorizo cut into quarters (the type you'd buy for homemade pizzas), supposed to be served with garlic and chilli sourdough but got a slice of toast, asked about this and the manager came back 10mins later saying the kitchen didn't know how to make it so they gave me cheese on toast. Caesar salad starter came with no chicken, croutons or dressing, was awful. Pickled onion rings were just normal onion rings but exceptionally greasy. On to the mains, the salmon was served with freezing broccoli and half cooked baby potatoes for all of us that ordered this so they were sent back. Chicken stack was ok, burger was like one of the frozen burgers you'd buy and throw in the oven. Service charge was added to the bill, probably normal but not advertised anywhere we could see. Overall an extremely poor experience.

Saw this place while waiting on the Hop on hop off bus tour. Very friendly service and the food was really good.

Great place for pints and food, the staff are very nice. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich is extremely tasty, big portion too. Pints and cocktails are fab and good value for city centre.

Visited here before heading to the Opera House for a show. Ordered drinks and food which took a long time to arrive. Once food arrived no one came near us again. We were going to have dessert and another drink but ended up having to ask for the bill and leave as we were running out of time. I ordered a Strawberry Daquiri which wasn't great. Burger was nice but chips were awful, cold and hard, and others thought the same. Atmosphere was nice with live music, and the staff member who took our orders was lovely, but seemed very busy.

Really nice restaurant with great food. Originally came here thinking it was owned by the same person as the one in NYC so I knew the food was good, asked the guy and he said it wasn’t owned by the same people but the food was totally amazing and the atmosphere is great, live music playing whilst you eat. Staff were friendly and bouncers were helpful. Definitely recommend checking this restaurant out!
