About This Pub
Ah, Hammer & Pincers – it's one of those pubs that really hits the spot for a good old meal out, tucked away in Wyberton. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the food is a standout; imagine tucking into a fat, juicy mixed grill or a mahoosive carvery with loads of veg and perfectly cooked beef – all for a bargain price that won't break the bank. The staff seem like a lovely bunch, polite and willing to go the extra mile, like when they rustled up a roast even after the kitchen had wound down. But, let's be honest, it's not all pints and roses; there are times when service falls a bit flat, with stories of long waits in an empty spot or silly rules about what you can have with your chips, which can be a right nuisance. Still, with a strong overall rating, it's clear this place does a lot right, and I'd say it's worth popping in if you're nearby – just keep your expectations in check for the odd hiccup. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed catch-up over some tasty nosh.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely brilliant – think juicy mixed grills and massive carvery plates that are great value for money, leaving you feeling properly stuffed.
-
Portions are generous, with options like a huge Yorkshire pudding and plenty of veg, making it a top choice for a hearty meal.
-
Staff come across as really polite and efficient, always ready to accommodate, like when they sorted out a late roast dinner request.
-
It's got a solid overall vibe with a 4.4 rating from loads of reviews, suggesting it's a reliable spot for good grub and a relaxed atmosphere.
Cons
-
Service can be a bit hit or miss, with some rigid rules like not allowing veg with chips instead of mash, which feels a tad inflexible.
-
There might be frustrating waits for food, even when the place isn't busy, as one person waited 30 minutes and nearly wrote it off.
-
Occasional incompetence shows up, like orders not being fully available or incomplete service, which can leave you a bit disappointed.
-
With only a few recent reviews analysed, the recent average rating dips to 3.7, hinting that things might not always be as smooth lately.

What a litany of incompetence, went on Sunday at 6.05pm and sat in the conservatory and ordered 2 steak and ale pies with chips, my wife asked for veg instead of peas and was told you cannot have veg if your having chips only if your having mash !! Waited 10 minutes then they come and tell us we only have one portion of chips left !!! I said my wife can have the chips I will have mash. Went to order drinks and asked for orange and diet lemonade “ sorry we don’t have any diet drinks “ !! My wife asks for a glass of Merlot “ sorry we only have Shiraz “ my tells the waitress I can see a bottle of Merlot there “ oh sorry I cannot open that as it’s a cork not screw top “ eventually they came with our drinks and about 20 minutes later came and said very sorry we only have one steak and ale pie. At this point we gave up in disgust and left. No this wasn’t a practice run for a Brian Rix farce this was what passes for service NOT
Just had A Fat Juicy Mix Grill , Absolutely Brilliant and great value for money .
Best Mixed Grill I’ve had in Years and the steak was cooked perfectly .
Staff were great and very polite and efficient.
My son Loved the Breakfast Burger said he would definitely come back next time we are here .
Would highly recommend to all who are passing by to try this restaurant.
Thank you guys !
We had 2 courses for £11. The carvery lunch was mahoosive. 7 types of veg. 2 large slices of beef and a big Yorkshire pudding. I had the sticky chilli pork belly to start. And the other starter was garlic mushrooms. We really enjoyed it. Feel proper stuffed.
This is not the review I thought I was going to write, after waiting 30 minutes for our food in an empty pub. I'd said to my husband that the food needs to be really good for me to want to come back. Well, the chef knocked it out of the park! Mine, particularly, was lovely! Massive plate and the biggest gammon steak I've ever been served, cooked perfectly! The chips are like chip shop chips and are fab! I'd pop in just for the chips! My husband's burger didn't particularly look attractive, but he said it tasted delicious, which is the main thing. Unfortunately I didn't get a picture. He said he would've preferred the burger to be pressed out more, which would also mean the burger would fill the bun instead of looking like a misshapen meatball in the middle. But again, he said it tasted really good. Not keen on the chopping board plate though. I'd started eating mine before I thought to take a picture, but it doesn't represent just how big that gammon steak and plate was! We'll definitely be back for the gammon! 👌
We spent a few days in a holiday lodge nearby. After spending the day out on sunday, we stopped off for a meal here. We called ahead as we were arriving after the carvery had finished however the chef had beef leftover and accommodated us with 3 roasts and a mixed grill.
The food was good and we were all blown away by the size of the portions. The service was good and we all had an enjoyable meal.
