About This Pub

Ah, Hales Bar – it's one of those pubs that just warms your heart the moment you step inside. Nestled in Harrogate, this place boasts an incredible history stretching back to the 18th century, with original features like gas lights and Victorian decor that make you feel like you've wandered into a bygone era. I absolutely love how they've preserved that authentic feel, from the cosy vaults room with its roaring log fire to the secret garden out the back, which is a lovely spot for a summer pint. The beers are spot on too – plenty of local cask ales that are served just right, and the staff are brilliant, always ready with a smile and a tip on what to try next. It's got that proper pub atmosphere where you can unwind with mates, and being dog-friendly just adds to the charm. On the downside, it does fill up quickly, so you might struggle for space on busier nights, and with no food on offer, it's not ideal if you're peckish. Still, if you're after a genuine, no-fuss spot for a quality drink and a bit of history, it's well worth seeking out – once you find it, I reckon you'll be back for more!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Its rich history and original features, like gas lighting and Victorian mirrors, make it feel truly authentic and charming.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always up for a chat and happy to recommend a great beer.

This is a pub that should be on everyone's map. It's kept a lot of its original charm and atmosphere. The service was good (the young bearded gentleman who took two put-you-down phrases from me!). This is a place I'll be recommending.

Came for a quick drink with friends. First visit. Really nice cosy pub. Two bars, one very quiet and the other very busy. Not a huge place but we were able to get a table. The busy bar was much more warmer, welcoming and more interesting. Very good choice of drinks at reasonable prices. Service was friendly and helpful. Definitely worth a visit.

A CAMRA Heritage pub with a classic interior you just have to see (Main bar to the right) All the cask ales appear to be locally brewed inc the Hale’s Pale which is spot on. A proper drinkers pub - no food served.
