About This Pub

Ah, Barking George in Harrogate – it's one of those places that has a certain charm about it, you know? Picture a well-restored bar with plenty of seating and interesting features that make it feel like a proper hideaway. I love how the bar's right in the centre, making it easy to grab a drink or order some food, and the staff are always up for a chat, which adds to that friendly, homely vibe. They've got a solid range of beers at prices you'd expect on the high street, and if you're into tasty grub, some dishes really shine with their bold flavours and hearty portions – I can see why folks rave about them. On the flip side, it's not all perfect; I've heard a few stories of meals that fell flat, like sandwiches that were a bit on the dry side and not up to scratch, which is a shame when you're looking forward to a good bite. Service can be efficient when it's quiet, but there have been times when not everything arrives together, leaving you waiting around. All in all, it's a decent spot for a casual get-together or a quiet drink, especially if you're with your furry friend, but I'd say go in with an open mind and maybe stick to the drinks if you're not in the mood for any surprises.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated, creating a really welcoming and relaxing atmosphere.
  • Friendly staff who make you feel right at home, and they even welcome dogs, which is a lovely touch for pet lovers.
  • A great selection of beers at fair prices, perfect for enjoying a pint in a cosy setting.
  • Some dishes are spot on with bold, bursting flavours and generous portions that leave you satisfied.
Cons
  • Food quality can be hit or miss, with a few reports of disappointing meals like dry sandwiches that didn't quite hit the mark.
  • Service might have the odd slip-up, such as delays in getting all orders out together, which can put a dampener on things.
  • Overall experiences vary, with some visits feeling underwhelming despite the charming vibe.

The room itself is very spacious and nicely decorated. The bar area is central and that is where you order your drinks and food. It wasn't very busy and very few people were eating so the service once the orders were placed was very efficient, with all 4 meals arriving at the same time. The ordering process was a bit of a faff as whilst there were 2 till areas you could only use one, and as the night progressed this was surrounded by people standing at the bar, so you had to push through. The fish and chips I ordered were nicely cooked with a decent portions being provided. The sticky toffee pudding was nothing special though, with the sponge being pretty tasteless are requiring a dunk in the toffee sauce.

Had lunch here on 10th April & it was disappointing!! We ordered from the light bite menu, crispy fish sandwich & roast meat sandwich of the day!! We have dined here before & had these sandwiches!! However this time we received 2 Dried Up buns with what looked like Roadkill in the meat sandwich!! Thick cut chips which came with both were non existant!! There was a bowl of gravy? So we paid £29 for 2 Sarnies & 2 soft drinks!! Avoid!!

Ordered food and drinks for 4 people. 3 meals arrived with a statement that the other would be following shortly. All 3 had finished their meals and still no sign of the 4th. Manager spoken to who stated a communication error with kitchen. Not good enough. I was visiting my parents before going travelling for 2 years. Some farewell, thanks a bunch!!!

A well restored hotel bar, with lots of seating and great/interesting internal features. A nice relaxing internal atmosphere. Great range of beers at typical street prices. Another to add to the list for a return visit, staff very friendly and they also welcome dogs.

Amazing tasty food, sauces were bursting with flavour !! Venison pappardelle and pan roast chicken breast, bacon, mushrooms and pearl onions in a creamy mead sauce, with spring onion mash . Good size portions . Will definitely return .
