About This Pub
Ah, the Green Dragon – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper hidden gem in Essex. From what I've gathered from the reviews and details, the food really steals the show; people rave about the generous portions and fresh flavours, whether it's a hearty roast or one of their summer specials like the Halloumi Fajita Burger. The staff sound like absolute stars too, always attentive and making sure everyone, including families and those with disabilities, feels included and cared for. That historic building with its beams and peaceful setting makes it a cracking choice for a relaxed afternoon or evening, and perks like the beer garden and dog-friendly policy mean it's versatile for all sorts of get-togethers. On the flip side, it does seem to lack a bit of buzz sometimes, as one reviewer pointed out it's not always packed, which could make it feel a tad empty if you're after that lively pub vibe. Plus, being out in the countryside, it might not be the most convenient for a quick stop if you're not local. All in all, if you're looking for a solid, welcoming spot for good grub and a chat with mates, I'd say give it a go – it's got that warm, homely charm that makes you want to come back.
Pros and Cons
Pros

The food is absolutely spot on – think massive portions of fresh, tasty dishes like roasts and specials that leave you feeling well satisfied.
-
The staff are a delight; they're friendly, welcoming, and really go the extra mile, making everyone feel right at home.
-
It's set in a gorgeous, historic 18th-century building in a peaceful rural spot, perfect for a relaxing pint or meal away from the hustle.
-
Loads of great features like a beer garden, dog-friendly vibes, and family-friendly setup, plus handy things like WiFi and a car park.
-
They've got fun specials and events, such as Steak Thursdays and Pride celebrations, which add a nice touch to the experience.
Cons
-
It can feel a bit quiet at times, which might not suit those after a buzzing atmosphere, though that does mean you get plenty of space.
-
With its rural location, it might not be the easiest spot to pop into if you're not driving or nearby, potentially limiting spontaneous visits.

Cannot fault this Restaurant apart from the lack of customers!
The food was great, massive portions! The service were friendly and welcoming, the building in its self is beautiful so I dont understand why its not more busy!
Go people gooo!
Came in today with family. I had the roast beef which was amazing will definitely be back again.
Michele and amber where our waitresses both were lovely thank you for such a lovely afternoon out
Went here today for a family birthday! Food was amazing all freshly cooked and tasty.
Michelle and Amber looked after us and nothing was too much. We have a disabled young man in our party and Michelle took the time to listen to what he wanted and not talk past him or down to him as many do when in other restaurants! Really made the day feel special both ladies are both a huge asset to the green dragon we will definitely be back! Thank you ladies for all you’ve done today xxx
We’re staying at the Holiday Inn in Braintree and were looking for a nice pub meal to finish our Bank Holiday away and we booked a table here. Well, as soon as we were inside we were greeted by a lovely server called Michelle. She was lovely to talk to and very attentive. All of the courses we had were delicious. My mother’s lamb shank meal was huge! A proper dinner with the most magnificent Yorkshire pudding I have ever seen! I had the best hunters chicken and halloumi fries for a long time. To top it off we both had ice cream scoops and they were just the right size to finish off a wonderful evening. We hope to be back this way next year so we will definitely call again.
Quality food & generous portions, lovely surroundings, good sized car park and beer garden. Definitely the place for a pre match meal/drink before a visit to Braintree FC. Friendly staff and away from the hectic roads, much required after the queues on the M25 !
