About This Pub
You know, when you step into the Astronomer, it's got that cosy pub feel that's just right for a catch-up with friends or a family meal – it's part of the Hungry Horse bunch, tucked away in Great Notley near Braintree, with the country park nearby for a bit of fresh air after. I love how they've got these cracking deals on food, like tucking into selected dishes for only £10 on weekdays, and the menu's packed with classics that hit the spot. The staff really stand out; they're polite and helpful, sorting out allergies and making sure everything's just as you like it, which makes you feel looked after. Plus, with things like the outdoor play area and pool table, it's brilliant for families or a casual game. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – I've heard a few grumbles about some food not being cooked to perfection, and the Guinness might not be the best you've tasted, so it pays to keep expectations in check. Overall, it's a solid choice for a laid-back night out, especially if you're after good value and a welcoming atmosphere, but do plan ahead for busier times to make the most of it.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile to help with things like dietary needs – it's like chatting with mates behind the bar.
-
Fantastic value for money with deals like meals for just £10, making it easy to enjoy a proper pub feed without breaking the bank.
-
It's super family-friendly, with outdoor play areas and plenty of space for little ones, plus facilities like WiFi and a car park that make visits hassle-free.
-
A lively atmosphere with fun extras like a pool table and games, perfect for a relaxed evening or watching the match.
Cons
-
Some dishes can be hit or miss, like overcooked salmon in a few cases, which takes the edge off an otherwise tasty meal.

It gets really busy at times, so you might have to book ahead to avoid waiting around, especially on weekends.
-
Drinks like Guinness aren't always spot on, which is a shame if you're after that perfect pint.

Nice open area with kids play area outside drinking area and a sports area with pool table fruit machines.
Loads of parking for when it's busy it can get realy busy there so best to book a table online we did and it was straight forward easy to do.
Food was nice dessert even better 😋 price is very reasonable for eating out
Would definitely be going back there
Ordered food a sharing platter, started a game of pool straight after ordering. Half way through the game food was served suggested freshly cooked. Very friendly welcoming staff. Clean and tidy and a good play area for kids. Reasonable prices. Not the best guinness
The two lovely ladies who served us this evening were very polite and friendly. Our service was prompt, from ordering to receiving our starters. Miles, the chef working alone that evening, cooked everything to perfection, and the food was piping hot. It was amazing! The timing was excellent, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere was lovely. We would definitely dine here again. Thank you.
Lovely lunch with family. Really friendly and attentive front of house staff Chloe & Ashlea.
Food lovely too, thanks to chefs Miles & Peter.
Will be back with my little ones soon!
I visited here by myself, and each time I have been here, it’s been very enjoyable.
I had the ‘Mix It Up’ menu on one occasion, and I chose the Grilled Salmon Fillet and my two sides were Mexican Pasta Salad and Spicy Rice. I found everything really tasty, however the salmon was overcooked and a bit dry (the reason I didn’t give 5 stars for the food). It was good that the Mix It Up menu was on offer on the day I went there - a nice bonus.
On the most recent occasion, I had the Steak & Ruddles Ale Pie with mashed potatoes, peas and gravy. I found the pie filling plentiful and very tasty, however I could have done with more gravy (this was served in a small gravy boat), and the pastry was rather thick and dry, in my opinion. Otherwise, everything was very good.
The staff are very friendly and personable, and check in with you to ask how everything was for you.
The atmosphere was as you would expect at a Hungry Horse family food establishment.
Overall, a very good place to get a meal. I will be returning, as this is on the way back home to Sudbury, Suffolk, from my place of work in Chelmsford in the evening. I’m pleased that I discovered this place.
