About This Pub

Ah, the Golden Star – it's one of those classic Norwich pubs that just draws you in with its friendly chatter and homely feel. I've got to say, the team behind the bar really know how to make you feel welcome, whether you're popping in for a quick ale or settling in for the evening. They've nailed that mix of traditional charm and a lively outlook, with a great lineup of local brews and other drinks that keep things interesting. It's spot-on for a laid-back catch-up or enjoying a Sunday roast when it's hitting the mark. On the flip side, though, there have been a few hiccups with the food – like that time someone was let down by a misunderstanding about the menu, which left a bit of a sour note. Still, if you're after a proper pub experience without the city centre hustle, it's worth a visit, but maybe double-check on the grub before you go. All in all, it's a solid choice for us pub lovers, with the highs outweighing the lows if you go in with the right mindset.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant and make you feel right at home, always going the extra mile to look after everyone.
  • It's got a lovely traditional pub vibe with a bright and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for meeting new people or catching up with mates.
  • They offer a fantastic rotating selection of local and national ales, plus continental lagers and a good range of wines and spirits to suit all tastes.
  • The Sunday roasts and food options get high praise when they're on point, making it a great spot for a relaxed meal.
  • Conveniently located just minutes from Norwich city centre, so it's easy to pop in for a quick pint or a longer session.
Cons
  • There have been some mix-ups with the food service, like confusion over who caters it, which led to a disappointing experience for some folks.
  • Food availability seems inconsistent, with Sunday lunches not always living up to expectations, so it might not be the most reliable choice for a bite.
  • No one under 18 after 9 PM could be a downside if you're planning a family outing that runs late.
  • While the pub's generally buzzing, there aren't any upcoming events listed, which might make it feel a bit quiet if you're after more lively entertainment.

A really nice, traditional pub not too far from the city centre. Good food menu and roast options, and friendly bar staff. Will definitely be coming back here again soon

We ate here as we thought it was catered by Blue NR3 (which was confirmed on our arrival by the waitress), but were later told this was a misunderstanding and it stopped a couple years ago. I can see now that they no longer operate at this location. We had a disappointing Sunday lunch at the Golden Star and we will definitely not be coming back. Do not be fooled (like us) with the overall star rating on TripAdviser, as you can see there are also some ‘terrible’ reviews from other customers who have recently eaten here which very much align with our experience. I personally couldn’t eat the vegetarian option (I’ve eaten many Sunday lunches out and never had this experience), but when I politely fed this back and asked to return my full plate for a refund, the member of staff was dismissive and defensive, saying it was a personal preference and there was nothing they could do. They had taken the plate of food back into the kitchen without offer anything else, so I paid for a meal that I didn’t even eat. Aside from this, the general quality of the food was poor. The potatoes and cauliflower cheese were cooked well, but the vegetables were soggy, the Yorkshire pudding was cold and the gravy was instant. There are so many restaurants in Norwich and Norfolk that offer a great a Sunday lunch with lovely service too and this is not what we experienced here.

Really nice traditional pub. The starters / tapas were amazing. Would highly recommend for a laid back drink and food outside of the city centre. Will definitely be back.
