About This Pub
Ah, the Golden Cross – it's one of those reliable Wetherspoon spots that you can pop into for a pint and a bite without breaking the bank. From what I've gathered chatting about it, the staff really shine through; they're helpful and make you feel welcome, like that standout server who had folks raving about his service. The food's generally a winner too – a nice jacket potato or a cold lager can make for a proper enjoyable meal, and it's always buzzing with energy, which is brilliant if you're in the mood for a lively chat. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect; some have mentioned the portions feeling a tad stingy, like skimping on chips or sauce, which can leave you a bit underwhelmed after forking out for it. And on busier days, you might find yourself queuing for a table, which takes away from the relaxed feel you'd hope for. Overall, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together, especially if you're local or passing through Bromsgrove – just go in with realistic expectations and you'll likely have a good time, but maybe double-check those menu changes first!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely lovely and really go the extra mile, like that chap Reece who got such high praise for his top-notch hospitality.
-
The food hits the spot when it's good – think tasty jacket potatoes and cold lagers that go down a treat, especially for a quick bite in a bustling spot.
-
It's a popular place, which means it's always lively and full of character, making for a great atmosphere if you're up for some good company.
-
Being a Wetherspoon, it's generally affordable and conveniently located on the high street with easy parking nearby.
Cons
-
Portion sizes can be a bit disappointing, like not getting enough chips with your burger or skimpy amounts of sauce on the wraps, which leaves you wanting more for the price.
-
Sometimes changes to the menu, such as reducing the chipotle sauce, can make a favourite dish feel lacklustre and not quite up to scratch.
-
It gets really busy, so you might end up waiting for a table, which isn't ideal if you're after a relaxed visit.
-
With no clear operating hours listed, it might be tricky to plan a trip, and the overall experience can vary depending on the day.

Love love this place but this evening left not feeling like returning.. staff lovely as usual & enjoyed part of my food but disappointed they've changed & put little chipotle sauce on the wraps.. usually it would be awash with it, very tasty but hardly anything on there.. I asked if I could have a little more on my wrap but told I'd have to pay for extra... 90p apparently 😵 normally I would've stayed & ordered cocktail pitchers but tonight I just didn't feel in the mood 😕 understand maybe cutbacks but when everyone else gets to help themselves to all other condiments it just didn't seem right to pay extra for a spit more in my wrap.. usually I'd demolish my wraps but was so dry I had to tear most of it away& waste it..
I recently met Reece a very helpful, kind, outgoing member of of staff at Bromsgrove spoons. He is a credit to the team and his hospitality was outstanding. Wish more Wetherspoons had more staff like Reece!!!
Had a great few hours here with my husband and relatives. The jacket potatoe I had was served quickly and was really nice.My lager was cold, and the staff we're attentive.Pay as you go car park to the rear.If you're in the area I would highly recommend a visit, especially if you're like me and love all things spoons.
Nice tasting food, but oh dear ! not many chips on plate. I paid £10.13 for meal and think more chips could have accompanied the burger. I was told that it's a standard portion, but they're only made of potato.. and could have been more generous?
I've visited The Golden Cross a few times, and it’s always bustling with activity. On our recent visit, it was so busy that we had to wait for a table, but that’s often a sign of a popular spot! The staff are generally friendly and helpful, always ready to offer sauces and condiments with a smile.
The food can sometimes take a while to come out, but given how busy it gets, it's understandable. Plus, the meals still taste good, which makes the wait worthwhile. Overall, it's a decent place for a bite to eat, especially if you don't mind a lively atmosphere!
