About This Pub

Ah, The Murderers – or as some know it, the Gardeners Arms – is this charming, historic pub right in the heart of Norwich that's been around since at least 1841, and you can really feel that timeless appeal when you step inside. I've got to say, it's got so much going for it; the beer choices are brilliant, with loads of local brews that make every visit feel special, and if you're a sports fan, it's an absolute winner with its award for the best place to catch the game. The food's another highlight – think tasty buffets and meals that have impressed at parties and gatherings, all served up by staff who are genuinely warm and helpful, making you feel like part of the furniture. It's even dog-friendly, which is lovely for those who want to bring their four-legged mates along, as long as they're well-behaved. On the flip side, it can get a bit crowded, especially in the evenings, so you might struggle for a seat during peak times, and the facilities are a tad compact, which isn't ideal when it's bustling. Overall, though, it's a solid choice for a relaxed afternoon or lively night out – I'd definitely pop in if you're in the area, just maybe avoid the rush hours for the best experience.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely spot on, with a fantastic range of local ales and traditional options that make it a real treat for any ale enthusiast.
  • It's a brilliant spot for watching sports, having won awards for it, so if you're into live matches, you'll feel right at home with the lively atmosphere.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile, whether it's for a group gathering or a special event like a birthday party.
  • They've got a great vibe as one of Norwich's oldest pubs, family-run and independent, plus it's dog-friendly which is perfect if you're out with your furry friend.
  • The food is top-notch, especially for buffets and meals, with plenty of hot and cold choices that have left folks raving about their experiences.
Cons
  • It can get pretty packed, especially during busy times, so you might find space a bit tight if you're after a quiet corner.
  • The toilets are on the small side, which might not be ideal when things are heaving, though they're kept clean.
  • There are a few rules for bringing dogs, like keeping them on leads and not feeding them inside, which could be a minor hassle if your pup gets a bit lively.

My surprise birthday party was held here, food was quite honestly the best buffet I’ve ever had - selection of hot and cold foods and the amount was amazing. We had our own bar area and staff so attentive and friendly Really could not of done more to assist. 100% would recommend and will definitely visit again soon

Great authentic pub run by a well known landlord in the city. Great selection of drinks and not expensive for a city centre pub. Food amazing and the food for our Buffet was outstanding. Friendly bar staff and great vibe in the heart of the city, very famous pub know as The Murderers to the locals and even in the UK.

Better known by it's pseudonym 'The Murderers', it is a well known local hostelry and purveyor of real ales - a must for lovers of Norfolk real ales including their own 'Murderers Ale' brew. Always busy, space is sometimes at a premium and the toilets are small but clean (& even have TVs in front of the urinals to keep up to speed with the latest Premier league managerial sacking!). In summary, a pub full of character, Norwich character, with bar staff who are willing to go the extra mile; taking group photos etc.
