About This Pub

Ah, the White Horse in York – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem, tucked away in the city centre. I really appreciate the authentic vibe; it's got that timeless charm where you can kick back with a pint and soak in the history. The drinks are a highlight, with a solid range of ales and more, and the food doesn't disappoint either – those home-cooked dishes are just the ticket for a satisfying meal. Throw in the entertainment lineup, like live gigs and karaoke nights, and it's brilliant for a fun night out with friends. On the downside, it's not all smooth sailing; a few folks have mentioned run-ins with unhelpful staff, and it can get heaving, which might make for a bit of a wait. Still, overall, it's a welcoming spot that's worth a visit if you're after that genuine pub experience in York – just keep an eye on the service and plan accordingly.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The White Horse has that classic, authentic pub feel – it's like stepping into a time capsule of the best bits of British tradition, making every visit feel cosy and welcoming.
  • The staff are generally brilliant; they're friendly and go the extra mile, like helping out late arrivals or chatting away while you enjoy your drink.
  • There's a cracking selection of drinks on offer, from superb cask ales to lagers and wines, perfect for pairing with a meal or just catching up with mates.
  • The food is spot on – think hearty home-cooked classics like steak and ale pie or smash burgers that hit the spot after a day out in York.
  • It's full of entertainment, with live music on Saturdays, karaoke on Fridays, and even open mic nights on Mondays, keeping things lively and fun.
  • Being dog-friendly and right in the heart of York makes it a handy spot for a quick stop or a full evening out.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit inconsistent; some experiences have been less than ideal, with reports of rude or indifferent bar staff that put a dampener on things.
  • It gets pretty packed at times, which might mean waiting longer for a drink or a table, especially during busy events or peak hours.
  • There's no clear info on opening times, so you might end up planning around that and having to double-check before heading over.

Super, authentic pub. The kind of place where it's not entirely clear which decade of the past 50 years you've walked into - in the best possible way. When we visited the bartender went out of her way towards help us... Late and bedraggled as we rolled in. Good old fashioned down-to-earth hospitality.

Scoring this as a ‘Pub’ because that’s what the downstairs bit is. Extraordinary - such a rude and indifferent bar maid. Nice pub but very, very, poor service.

The White Horse is a great traditional pub. There is a good selection of draught drinks, including hand pulled cask conditioned real ales. The ones we tried were excellent condition. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. There is a dart board and TVs for watching Sport. The pub is dog friendly.

Very busy pub but the bar staff were friendly and appeared to managing it well. It has a small bar area, sportn on the tv at one side and what looked like an area for live entertainment. Certainly somewhere that you could go and would be welcomed.
