About This Pub
Ah, the Duke of Monmouth – it's one of those Oxford spots that feels like a proper local haunt, you know? From what I've gathered, it's got this warm, inviting atmosphere where you can pop in for a pint, catch some live footie on the big screens, or even grab a bite with the family. The food deals are an absolute winner; imagine tucking into a juicy burger or pulled pork tacos without breaking the bank – brilliant value, and plenty of folks rave about how tasty it all is. The staff often come across as genuinely welcoming, chatting away and making sure you're sorted, which really adds to the charm. But, let's be honest, it's not all sunshine and roses. There have been a few grumbles about dodgy dishes, like overcooked meals or subpar salads that didn't quite hit the spot, and some service slip-ups that left a sour taste. Still, with an overall rating hovering around 4.3, it's clear most visits are a hit, so I'd say it's worth giving it a go for a relaxed evening out – just keep your expectations in check and maybe avoid peak times if you're after a seamless experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is generally spot on, with tasty options like burgers, tacos, and a mixed grill that hit the mark, especially with those great deals like three small plates for £15.
-
Staff can be really friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home, as mentioned in a few reviews where they went the extra mile.
-
It's a brilliant spot for catching live sports, with a beer garden, big screens, and facilities like Sky Sports and TNT, perfect for enjoying events like the Women's Euros or rugby tours.
-
The pub has a welcoming vibe overall, with family-friendly touches, a nice outdoor area, and handy amenities like WiFi and a car park, making it easy for a relaxed visit.
Cons
-
Food quality can be hit or miss, with some reports of disappointing dishes like burnt burgers, tinned-tasting mac and cheese, or even a brown salad that put a damper on things.
-
Service isn't always up to scratch, as one review mentioned a rude phone interaction and unhelpful staff, which could leave you feeling a bit let down.
-
It might get crowded during big events, potentially leading to waits or inconsistencies, based on the mixed experiences shared.
-
While it's inexpensive, a few meals didn't live up to expectations, suggesting it's not foolproof for every outing.

Had lunch at this pub on Monday as we visiting Oxford. We took advantage of the offer three small plates for £15 I wouldn't call them small we had the cheese burger fries, pulled pork tacos and hot honey chicken all were fantastic and Jude and Chris were extremely friendly and welcoming. I would highly recommend this pub for value, service and last but far from least the food.
Will likely not come here again. The salad served to me was brown.. along with an end of a tomato that had not been cut properly. The Mac and cheese I was served, tasted like one that had just come out of the tin. Only positive was that it stayed hot. My partner’s burger was burnt, and pulled pork pretty tasteless. Expensive for the quality we were provided. Wetherspoons would have been better.
My Partner has been here multiple times before and had no problem.
Massively disappointed.
been to this pub previously and absolutely loved it, however my last experience was rather unpleasant.
I went around a week ago and when calling up prior the lady on the phone was rather rude and just unpleasant to have a conversation with.
when arriving at the pub, i believe the same lady served us drinks (young and dark hair) was rather rude and lacked customer service completely.
I use to enjoy going to this pub but the service that was received - I’ll no longer come here. Besides that, the food and atmosphere is usually a 10/10 just had a terrible experience last week.
I had a lovely visit here today.
This pub has had a huge refurbishment and now has beautiful outdoor seating area too complete with a huge screen for all your favourite sporting events.
I had the mixed grill which was perfectly cooked by trainee chef Chris who also covered table service. He did an excellent job!
There is also a good selection of dining options for children and food is served from 12.00pm to 9.00pm daily.
It was so good to see bar staff member Jenny and Landlady Ashleigh who provided a warm, friendly and welcoming service in such a relaxing and cosy environment.
There is ample free parking available at the rear next to the garden. Disabled parking spaces are adequate and easily accessible.
There is also a bus stop directly in front that takes you straight to the city centre.

I enjoyed a fabulous steak and a glass of Melbec this afternoon.
I did wonder what happened to the beautiful display of cakes and pastries. It seemed strange not seeing the creative display 😕
Our meal was perfectly cooked and served hot and presented well 😋
It's a lovely (and quite a good-sized) pub located on the Abingdon Road. The ambience is lovely and the staff are very warm, friendly and welcoming.
The food is excellent. Although the menu is compact, the quality and serving size are really good. We started with 1/2 kg chicken wings with hot sauce, and we all enjoyed it.
In main course, I personally found fish and chips with garden peas to be the best. On weekdays, the food is cheaper. Main course costs just ~ 12.50 for two people.
For dessert, I would recommend triple chocolate brownie with ice cream. Absolutely fantastic.
Overall, had a really good experience !!
