About This Pub
Ah, the Cross Keys – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of Nottingham, with its cosy vibe and a fantastic array of drinks that any beer enthusiast would love. I have to say, the Sunday roasts stand out as a highlight; they're packed with flavour, using award-winning local produce, and the presentation is spot on, making it feel like a proper treat without breaking the bank. The outside area is brilliant for a relaxed catch-up, especially if you've got a furry friend in tow, and the staff's warm approach adds to that friendly atmosphere we all crave after a long week. On the flip side, though, there have been a few grumbles about food not always being cooked to perfection – like that raw chicken incident, which is a real shame when you're looking forward to a good meal. Portions can sometimes feel a bit light for the cost, and if sports aren't your cup of tea, it might not be the most appealing spot during match days. Overall, it's a solid choice for a pint and a bite, but I'd suggest keeping an eye on the details to ensure you have the best experience possible – it's all about that balance, isn't it?
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely brilliant – they've got seven hand-pulled cask ales and a solid range of craft beers, plus ciders that always hit the spot.
-
Their Sunday roasts are a real treat, with generous portions of tasty beef and excellent presentation; it's proper comfort food done right.
-
The staff are genuinely friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home, and the manager often goes the extra mile to ensure everyone's comfortable.
-
It's got a lovely outside area for enjoying a drink in the fresh air, and it's pet-friendly, which is perfect if you're popping in with your dog.
-
Prices are reasonable for what you get, and there are fun promotions like the Monday Ale Club and happy hours to keep things lively.
Cons
-
There have been a few mishaps with food, like undercooked dishes that put people off their meal, and it didn't always come with a proper apology.
-
Portions can feel a bit skimpy for the price, especially on some roasts where you might end up wanting more veg or sides to make it feel worthwhile.
-
Some items, like the Yorkshire puddings, might not always be at their best – we've heard they can dry out if they've been kept warm too long.
-
If you're not keen on sports, the live fixtures might not be your thing, as it has that vibe in parts.
-
It's a busy spot, so during peak times, you might find service a tad slower or the place a bit crowded.

31/5 Four of us attended. We sat outside for a drink first which was lovely. The pub has a great selection of beers including real ales (they had 4 on at the time). We went inside for food which was delicious and reasonably priced. Presentation was excellent too. The pub itself is great, a proper oldy worldy pub with character and the staff were all so happy, friendly, efficient and helpful (especially the lady with the lovely arm tattoo) who served us. Thank you for making our visit so enjoyable 🙂
Been a few times since the refurb and always impressed with the Sunday roast. The manager Steve was a highlight on our last visit, making sure my family were comfortable during a busy evening for the pub. Staff are friendly and cheap prices, can’t recommend enough!
Really impressed with our Sunday lunch - generous portions and the beef was extremely tasty. Minor gripe is that the Yorkshire pudding had been kept warm so that it had dried out entirely, being almost dusty when eaten. Other than that, I’d say was excellent.
I’m not into sports bars so didn’t especially enjoy the match being on while trying to eat.
Wanted to try the new menu after refurb and were excited, ordered 2 of the chicken schnitzel and were enjoying our meal until we discovered it was raw inside. Both of us were put off our meals and ask for the dishes to be taken away. The main issue was that there wasn't an apology, and as we both ordered the same dish we asked to be refunded and the waitress was rude and only offered to refund one and said "yours isn't raw" to the other dish. We were eventually fully refunded. Not normally one to write reviews but felt this needed to be addressed.
Very nice staff but very small portions for the price. For £16 you got one slice of wellington, a tablespoon of mashed swede, 3 roast potatoes, half a roasted carrot and a sliver of cabbage. Would be nice if on the vegan roast you got some more vegetables to replace the Yorkshire puddings. Also no vegan dessert options.
