About This Pub

Ah, the Crafty Scholar – it's one of those Lancaster locals that really pulls you in with its warm, easy-going charm. I've got to say, stepping inside feels like meeting up with mates for a proper catch-up; the staff are dead helpful and always up for a chat, which makes the whole experience feel welcoming. It's brilliant for watching live sports, whether it's the Premier League or rugby, with loads of screens dotted around so you won't miss a moment, and the beer garden is a gem for those balmy evenings. Plus, with affordable prices and student deals, it's a wallet-friendly choice for a night out. On the flip side, though, the food's not always hitting the mark – I've heard tales of gammon steaks arriving without the pineapple or turning out a bit chewy, and some folks have had issues with late deliveries and underwhelming burgers that don't quite satisfy. Still, if you're after a relaxed spot for drinks and a bit of sport, it's worth a visit, just maybe stick to the simpler options on the menu to keep things on the positive side. All in all, it's got that classic pub spirit, but like any place, it's got its ups and downs – I'd pop in for the atmosphere and see how it goes!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are always friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • It's a fantastic spot for catching live sports, with plenty of screens and a relaxed vibe that makes watching the game a real treat.
  • The pub is spacious and has a great beer garden, perfect for enjoying a pint outdoors on a sunny day in Lancaster.
  • Prices are pretty reasonable, especially for pub grub like a full English breakfast, and they've got student offers that are spot on for the local crowd.
  • There's a good selection of drinks, including real ale and cocktails, plus fun events and a lively atmosphere for occasions like birthdays or watching the footie.
Cons
  • Food can be hit or miss – some dishes, like the gammon steak, have turned out tough or missing key bits, which is a bit of a letdown.
  • Service might not always be spot on, with reports of meals arriving late or not quite as expected, leaving you waiting longer than you'd like.
  • While the place looks nice, the overall food quality doesn't always live up to the pub's welcoming feel, especially for premium-priced items.
  • It can feel a tad inconsistent, with some visits being brilliant and others where things just don't quite click, like soggy burgers or cold chips.

While the place looks nice and the staff pleasant, I was disappointed with the food. Ordered gammon steak which arrived minus the pineapple. After I pointed this out, a friendly waitress came over to say they had run out of pineapple (and that was that). Gammon was tough and tasteless which was hard work with the blunt knife I was given (steaks of any kind should be supplied with a steak knife). Overall the food for me and my partner was very average at best.

Spacious pub with decent food and drinks. Come here for big Sunday football match but it isn’t that busy. Good place to watch the game!

SIN CITY BURGER REVIEW. As there is no separate page to review Sin City burgers I will leave it here. Our meal was delivered half an hour late, soggy buns, raw onion, cold chips (very small amount for the cost too) and all at a rather premium price. The only good thing was the large patty which was well cooked.

An excellent pub to watch some sport if that is what you are after. The Crafty Scholar has a nice relaxed and easy-going feel about it right from the moment you enter the place and as you move around. There are a good number of TVs of different sizes and the staff are always keen to make you feel comfortable and welcome. The décor and ambience is just right in this pub, with plenty of seats and tables both upstairs and downstairs. Had a lovely time in this pub and would recommend it without hesitation, especially if you want to catch a football match or some other sports event.

Very large establishment. Easy to use QR Code ordering system though better to use in conjunction with the menu. Reasonably priced for Pub Grub-style food. Full English breakfast at a good price. Next to the Vue Cinema ideal for pre or post-movie night eating. Staff very friendly.
