About This Pub

Ah, Coal & Cotton – it's one of those pubs that really warms you up from the get-go, isn't it? Picture walking into this inviting bar area with its own gin distillery brewing up their special Boothstown Gin; it's got that perfect mix of cosy and exciting. The menus are a treat, full of hearty British classics with a bit of global flair, and they've thought of everyone with options for families, kids, and even vegan choices, all at a fair price. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the food's generally spot-on with generous portions that leave you satisfied, and the staff are dead helpful, jumping in to fix any slip-ups straight away. It's brilliant for a relaxed catch-up or a family meal, and being dog-friendly just adds to the charm. On the flip side, though, it can get a bit frustrating when it's bustling – waiting for food or drinks might take longer than you'd like, and occasionally a dish might not be quite right, like some chewy bits in the meat. Still, overall, it's a gem in Manchester that's worth a visit if you're after good grub and a welcoming atmosphere, just maybe plan for a quieter time or book in advance to keep things smooth.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with a beautiful bar area and their very own gin distillery that adds a unique touch.
  • They've got an impressive range of menus, from classic British dishes to options for kids, vegans, and those avoiding gluten, all made with top-quality ingredients.
  • Service is generally warm and welcoming, and they're quick to sort out any hiccups, making it feel like a proper friendly spot.
  • Portion sizes are generous, and the value for money is spot on, especially with perks like free drinks for signing up to their club.
  • It's family-oriented and dog-friendly, which makes it a great place for a relaxed day out with everyone in tow.
Cons
  • Service can drag a bit when it's busy, like waiting ages for food or drinks, which might put a dampener on things.
  • Every now and then, some dishes don't quite hit the mark, such as chewy meat or odd textures, though they do try to make it right.
  • It gets pretty packed at peak times, so you might need to book ahead to avoid any faff.

Breakfast treat for Father's Day. Place was busy but not crammed. Service was painfully slow, took nearly an hour for food to arrive. Ordered some extra drinks which again took ages. A drink arrived at the point we asked for the bill and never received one drink which was ordered. All in all was still lovely and food good but shame we had to wait so long.

I love a Sunday roast so always looking for new places to try, The Coal and Cotton was recommended to us and after looking at the menu online, decided to try it out… it did not disappoint! I opted for the Lamb roast (minus the red cabbage) and my partner chose Burger and chips. The portion sizes were insane and flavours to die for and I need to add that the Yorkshire pudding was one of the best I’ve tasted. The staff and atmosphere were great which just added to the whole experience, we’ll defo be back!

Nice pub with easy parking. The food was not as good as expected. Well, my salmon was nice, except the weirdly tough to chew grilled leaks. My friends ribeye though was so chewy it was hard to eat. However, they have excellent service, the immediately offered to replace it and the second was ok. So maybe it was a one off. Not expensive either.

Visited C&C with my parents who were visiting after been given two separate recommendations - it did not disappoint! Beautifully presented pub/bar area where we had a drink before heading through to the dining area for a meal. Fantastic atmosphere, one of the best I’ve experienced in some time in fact (Saturday night). Shared some small plates, the special of lobster ravioli was a real pick. Fillet steak (rare) cooked to perfection with an excellent pepper sauce. Smoked salmon and whipped feta - absolutely delicious. Scampi not bad, a little overdone and a touch dry. Steak sandwich was very well presented but the meat was of poor quality and very tough. Real shame on that one. I can’t imagine it usually is like this. Truffle mac and cheese wonderful. Truffle and Parmesan fries equally delicious. Wine list excellent - the Cairanne I fully recommend, good value at c. £36. Overall the food would have been a 4/5 given two slip ups but overall the experience would come to a 4.5/5 however as you can’t give half scores with google defo more to a 5 than a 4. Highly recommend. Will be back, and often!

Great breakfast on Saturday. They were really busy but the service was brilliant and food piping hot! Free filter coffee is a great bonus. We go regularly as it’s the best for food, value and friendly service.
