About This Pub

Oh, The Blue Bell is one of those pubs that just warms your heart the moment you step inside – it's this charming, historic spot in York that's been around since the 1700s, and you can really feel that old-school character in every nook and cranny. I love how they've got such a cracking selection of beers on tap; whether it's a classic ale or something more local, it's always spot on and served with a smile from the lovely staff who make you feel like you're catching up with old friends. The food's a treat too – think proper pub fare like those filling pork pies that hit the spot without fancying up the place too much. But, and I say this honestly, it's on the small side, so if you're popping in on a busy evening, you might find yourself squeezed in like sardines, which isn't ideal if you're after a bit more room to breathe. Plus, they've got these rules about no groups and keeping things phone-free, which keeps the chat flowing but could put off anyone wanting a more relaxed or rowdy gathering. All in all, it's a brilliant spot for sinking into a good pint and some genuine conversation, and with that high rating from so many folks, I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're in York and fancy something authentic and affordable.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beers are absolutely top-notch, with a fantastic selection of real ales and local brews that really hit the spot.
  • It's got that warm, cosy atmosphere you'd expect from a historic pub, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, always up for a chat and making sure everyone has a great time.
  • They serve up some cracking pub grub, like those hearty pork pies that leave you nicely satisfied without breaking the bank.
  • It's a chatty, sociable spot where you can forget about your phone and just enjoy good company and a pint or two.
Cons
  • The pub is quite small, so it can get pretty packed, especially on busier evenings, which might make it feel a bit cramped if you're after more space.
  • There are rules like no groups and keeping phone noise down, which is great for a quiet vibe but might not suit everyone looking for a lively night out with mates.
  • Being such a traditional spot, options might feel a tad limited if you're hoping for a wider variety of drinks or a more modern setup.

Excellent pub in York, small but perfectly formed. Four or five excellent beers and the pork pie definitely fills a gap. Remember the rules though no groups, no phone noise! Though that's no problem everyone is very chatty and you'll forget your phone very quickly whilst enjoying a good pint or three.

What a great old pub, small but rammed with customers. Great selection of real ales available. Staff were friendly and polite. Small bar area and room. Back room had a small serving hatch, love it. Beer was great. What a great place. Enjoyed my visit.

The Blue Bell is an absolute must-visit when in York! This charming, historic pub offers a warm and cozy atmosphere with its traditional decor and friendly staff. The selection of local ales and craft beers is fantastic, and the food is delicious—proper pub classics done right. What really sets The Blue Bell apart is its character. As one of York’s smallest and oldest pubs, it feels like stepping back in time. The service is welcoming, and it’s clear that the team takes pride in maintaining its authenticity. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this place offers a genuine Yorkshire pub experience. Highly recommend stopping by for a pint (or two!)—just be sure to arrive early as it’s popular and fills up fast. Can’t wait to return!

It's a tiny pub with a big heart. Friendly witty staff who look after their customers. Our one of those pubs that still feels like an extension of your living room where you can stop be your self with friendly locals. And don't forget the good quality ale. They even have their own.

Terrific old school pub that dates back to the 1600s when the building was erected and had become a factory that made bells. Opening in 1798 it has kept the same name since. Fantastic place and can't wait to go back again.
